From the

EDITOR

Welcome to our 97th issue of CosBeauty Magazine! As we patiently wait for

warmer weather and longer days, now’s the time to get a head start on

looking and feeling our best for the start of spring – and this issue is full

of fresh ideas to help you achieve this.

Kick off your spring metamorphosis with some of the season’s exceptional new

beauty releases (Tried, Tested & Loved on p68 and Ed’s Faves on p114) and get to

know the DIY tools and products for fabulous, just-walked-out-of-a-salon hair (Mane

Attraction, p104).

In our Back to Basics Skincare feature, p40, you’ll find a handy guide to what, and

when, to use on your skin to help it look brighter, younger and feeling flawless. And

on p76 we highlight hyaluronic acid, one of the hardest-working and most versatile

skincare ingredients.

Clear and radiant skin is, of course, attributed to more than just good-quality topical

ingredients. Gut health and the gut microbiome is a growing area of research and has

been linked to all matters of health, including the skin and brain. Our article on page

94 investigates the role the gut plays in overall physical and mental health, and what we

can do to keep it healthy.

We know that cosmetic surgery has the power to transform appearances, often

hand-in-hand with an improvement in self-confidence, and it seems the juggernaut

that is aesthetic medicine just keeps growing. Read our report on p88 on which

procedures have skyrocketed during the pandemic. We also have an in-depth guide to

rhinoplasty on p82, including what happens during surgery, what it can achieve and

non-surgical options.

And for a bit of fun, we look at lip “fashion” throughout the decades and how our

pouts have long represented the social and political climates of the time (p28).

We hope you enjoy this issue of CosBeauty Magazine and find inspiration to add to

the beauty in your life. And don’t forget to visit our website www.cosbeauty.com.au to

stay on top of what’s happening in the beauty and wellness industries.

THE WHO’S WHO AND WHAT’S NEW IN BEAUTY.

ROC SKINCARE PARTNERS WITH SJP FOR

THE ROC LOOK FORWARD PROJECT

A recent study* has found 90% of women feel anxious

about getting older, and the #1 driver of these anxieties

is related to the way they look (eg, lines, wrinkles). More

women (60%) are worried about their ageing appearance

than about having enough money for retirement (43%).

The RoC #LookForwardProject is an initiative to

celebrate the power of optimism and its scientificallybacked

impact on long-term health and wellbeing. Global

icon, RoC user and optimist Sarah Jessica Parker serves as

the voice of the campaign to inspire women to turn their

focus from ‘anxiety about ageing’ to ‘joy about living’.

The RoC Look Forward Project has an online resource

hub featuring new research from the brand, along with

practical insights and advice from subject-matter experts

and thought leaders on the proven difference optimism

makes in the ageing process.

‘So much of our younger lives are spent trying to

figure out who we are,’ said SJP. ‘As I’ve gotten older,

I’ve become much better equipped to problem solve, to

appreciate, to hear things that aren’t necessarily pleasant.

The time spent living and the experience that comes with

it adds up – and that’s something to look forward to.’

KATE WATERHOUSE HEADS UP

ULTRAFORMER CAMPAIGN

With a promise of “no downtime, more compliments”,

Cryomed’s highly successful Ultraformer III device is set to

extend its leadership in non-surgical skin tightening even

further with its new “Thanks, It’s Ultraformer” campaign.

The campaign is headed up by racing royalty Kate

Waterhouse alongside Icy Ling (influencer) and Lynette

Phillips (CEO, MaxMediaLab), and will follow their skin

journey with Ultraformer III treatments and capture the

process first-hand.

Ultraformer III is the world’s first and only micro and

macrofocused ultrasound (MMFU) system for contouring

the face, neck and body. This non-surgical skin tightening

and lifting device has become the treatment of choice for

patients and practitioners – with millions of treatments

performed around the world.

CERAVE’S WINTER 2022 #SKINCHAT

This June, CeraVe hosted a fun and

educational evening about all things

skin. CosBeauty got to chat with

dermatologist Dr Eleni Yiasemides

about the importance of properly caring

for your skin all year round.

During the cooler months our skin

can become dry and irritated so it’s

important to adopt a daily skincare

regime to help maintain moisture levels.

‘Keep it simple. As a general rule,

use a gentle hydrating cleanser, a richer

moisturiser and of course sunscreen,

even if the sun isn’t out or it’s a cold

wintry day,’ says Dr Yiasemides.

‘It’s also important to note that

skincare doesn’t have to be expensive;

it’s about key ingredients rather than

brands and no single product is

designed for everyone. Change up your

skincare seasonally and also according

to your different skin needs and

concerns as you age.’

One of our favourite brands

to combat winter skin is CeraVe

– it’s affordable, developed with

dermatologists, and it works to leave

skin hydrated and calm.

CeraVe is sold exclusively in Australia

at Chemist Warehouse.

IMMEMORIAL LIPS

HAVE BEEN SYMBOLS

OF SEXUALITY AND

WE TRACE THE POWER

OF THE POUT OVER THE

DECADES AND THE LIP

FASHIONS OF TODAY.

To many, the lips are the focal point of

the face. They are highly suggestive,

and their shape and look will speak

volumes about you before you have

even uttered a word.

There have been numerous studies

on the influence of lips on our culture,

their social psychology, sexuality and

position as a fashion accessory. In this

brief timeline, we take a look at the way

lip fashions evolved throughout the

decades and the directions they are

taking in the current day.

FEATURE

1920s, 30s & 40s

As the film industry began to blossom in

the 1920s, actress Theda Bara popularised

the doll-like shape and vampy lip colour of

the time. ‘Rosebud lips’ of deep red were

fashionable and popularised by pin-ups

such as Gloria Swanson and Clara Bow.

In the 1930s the natural lines of the lips

were accentuated with the upper lip being

wider than the lower. Joan Crawford,

renowned for her wide mouth, sported this

‘arrogant’ look – and by all accounts an

attitude to match. Marlene Dietrich in the

1940s also had an arrogant look, but the

40s somewhat reverted to the ‘cupid’s bow’

upper lip of the 20s, while keeping the

broader upper lip of the 30s. Judy Garland

had these lips accentuated with strong

colour and Ingrid Bergman wore hers with

a natural look. Red lipstick was the colour

of choice in the 1940s, thought to be

morale boosting during World War 2.

1950s

In the 1950s Marilyn Monroe epitomised

the ideal in lips (and everything else).

Her strong mouth, with a shorter lower

lip emphasised by natural lines, was

sensually highlighted by her openmouthed

smile, exaggerated by lip gloss.

1960s & 1970s

Shunning the vividly coloured lips

and conformity of previous eras, the

‘free-love’ decade of the 1960s saw

pale frosted colours and nude shades

prevailing, taken from the hippie look

and worn famously by Twiggy and

Natalie Wood. This carried through into

the 1970s for the day look (think Farrah

Fawcett) – but at night disco fever leaned

into bright glossy lip colours as seen on

the legendary Diana Ross.

1980s

In a complete turnaround from the

boho look of the previous 20 years, the

1980s heralded shock, gloss and glam

– everything was about excess and the

fashion and beauty world reflected this

spectacularly. Madonna, Grace Jones

and Cyndi Lauper pouted in pinks and

violets and frosts and slicks.

1990s

The 90s was an interesting decade for

lips. On the one hand you had oversized

and overtly sexy aka Pamela Anderson –

which coincided with a huge interest in

cosmetic lip augmentation. On the other

hand, grunge was very much in, with

matte lip shades in raisins and browns

paired with thin brows like those made

famous by Drew Barrymore.

2000s and 2010s

In the new era of reality TV in the

2000s, super glossy lips reigned

supreme, as donned by Paris Hilton

and Nicole Ritchie, while the 2010s

firmly cemented the muted matte lip.

In this decade, social media also had

an unprecedented influence on the rise

of lip filler treatments. Of course, in

this era of reality stars and social media

no one has been quite as influential as

Kylie Jenner. The Keeping Up With the

Kardashians star has built a career on

her transforming and ever-growing lips,

with her lip kits repeatedly selling out in

the new beauty essential.

What are the most

attractive female lips?

What dimensions might create the most attractive lips

in women? A new study published online by JAMA

Facial Plastic Surgery* used focus groups and morphed

computed images to try to find out.

In the study by Brian J.F. Wong, MD, PhD, of the

University of California, Irvine, and coauthors, faces of

white women were ranked by attractiveness with varied

lip surface areas created for the faces and upper to lower

lip ratios manipulated.

As it turns out, lips with a 53.5 percent increase in

surface area from the original image with a 1 to 2 ratio

of upper to lower lip that make up about 10 percent of

the lower third of the face were deemed to be the most

attractive, according to the results.

The study noted limitations, including that because

there is no established reference range for total lip

surface area modification in the general population, the

surface area percentage reduction and augmentation

extremes in the morphed faces were generated based on

clinical experience of what seemed to be feasible.

‘We advocate preservation of the natural ratio or

achieving a 1:2 ratio in lip augmentation procedures while

avoiding the overfilled upper lip look frequently seen

among celebrities,’ the study concluded.

THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO

WHAT, AND WHEN, TO USE

ON YOUR SKIN FOR A DEWY

AND CLEAR COMPLEXION.

ncare

www.cosbeauty.com.au 41

THE ‘THIN TO THICK’

LAYERING RULE

SKIN

Generally speaking, your products

should be layered applied from thinnest

to thickest in terms of texture. Start

light with essences and serums, and finish

with occlusive moisturisers and oils. So

the correct order would be:

(cleanser)

toner

essence

INSIDER TIP

serum

– if you use multiple, apply thinnest

first. If applying Vitamin C and hyaluronic

acid (a classic complementing duo), it’s best

to allow your Vitamin C to absorb

first before your HA. If you use retinol

in your nightly routine (you should be),

some experts recommend applying

this before any other serum or moisturiser

to help enhance its benefits.

SKIN

Cleansers

ALWAYS THE ESSENTIAL

FIRST STEP

STEP 1

Cleansers are an essential part of a

basic skincare routine. They wash off

makeup, dirt and oil and leave the skin

feeling clean, smooth and oil free. Your

skin should be cleansed at least twice a

day – in the morning and in the evening.

There are cleansers for every skin type. If

you’re prone to blocked pores, use gel

formulations. For delicate skin, use milky

products. Both gels and milky products

usually can be washed off. For dry skin,

use cream products, which generally can

be wiped off. If using a cream cleanser, it’s

advisable to use toner afterwards.

When it comes to cleansers, there is

no ‘one type fits all’. Gel cleansers are

typically recommended for oily, blemishprone

skin; cream cleansers for dry,

sensitive skin; foam, charcoal or clay

cleansers for oily, combination skin; and

oil-based or micellar water cleansers are

suitable for most skin types.

Toners

USED AFTER CLEANSING

To up your cleansing game, apply a

toner afterwards. Today’s toners are

very different to the some of the harsh

ones of the past and are packed with

skin-repairing ingredients such as

antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, amino

acids and ceramides, depending on

what skin concern you’re targeting.

Toners can remove the traces of

makeup, dirt and oil that your cleanser

may have missed. They can help to

reduce the appearance of pores and

refine the skin and are available for both

dry and oily skin. A gentle toner with

little or no alcohol can be beneficial for

all skin types.

STEP 3

Serums are the multi-tasking heroes of

skincare. These lightweight moisturebinding

products can be targeted to

address a myriad of skin concerns,

including pigmentation, sun damage

and ageing skin, as well as tone,

texture, fine lines and wrinkles and dry

skin. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and

retinol are some of the star ingredients

to look out for.

A quality serum penetrates deep into

the skin to deliver a concentrated dose

of active ingredients. Depending on the

ingredients, serums can be applied in

the morning, at night or both, and are

worn under your moisturiser.

Traditional serums are water-based,

but many now come in oil form. If

you’re layering treatment serums,

always use your water-based serums

before any oil-based ones.

SKIN

STEP 4

Moisturise

USED AFTER SERUMS TO HELP

SEAL IN ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

AND BOOST SKIN HYDRATION

AND MOISTURISATION

A moisturiser with a heavier molecular

structure will help create a barrier on

the skin’s surface so the active serum

ingredients do not escape, reducing

transepidermal water loss, or dehydration,

as it seals in natural moisture. It also

provides a physical barrier to outside

pollutants and can enhance the effects of

treatment serums.

While you can use a single face

moisturiser for day and night, it’s advisable

to use a richer moisturiser at night

because your skin absorbs products more

effectively while you sleep, undisturbed by

environmental factors such as the sun

and wind.

Which type of moisturiser suits you

is personal – it’s worth getting samples

to try them out. Your skin therapist can

help you establish if you have dry, normal

(combination) or oily skin. If your skin is dry,

you want humectants and ingredients such

as plumping lipids. For sensitive skin, look

for anti-inflammatories.

For combination or oily skin, you

also want anti-inflammatories as well as

ingredients that prevent oil slicks from

breaking out. There are also firming

moisturisers to help with sagging tissues.

Formulations vary from emulsions (waterbased,

better for oily skin) to dense creams

(oil-based, better for dry skin).

During the day, it is imperative to always

important skincare product you could ever

of your skin, apply sunscreen every single

sunscreen daily will defend your skin from

ADD-ONS:

exfoliants, peels & masks

SKIN

Exfoliants should be included at least weekly

to your skincare routine. Exfoliation removes

the dead surface cells which contribute both

to dryness and oiliness and can cause blocked

pores and problems like acne. Exfoliation also

improves circulation and stimulates blood flow

– and improved blood flow means improved

collagen production, vis-à-vis plumper,

smoother, tighter skin.

In addition to long-term benefits, by

removing surface cell debris, your trusty

exfoliator will also leave your skin looking

instantly fresher, rosier and brighter.

Similar to exfoliators, regular peels keep skin

looking refreshed. Light peels work to exfoliate

and renew skin by removing dead cells and

promoting new cell growth. Common typesof

peels contain lactic acid and glycolic acid.

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that

occurs naturally in our bodies and helps

stimulate the production of collagen and elastin

in the dermal layer. It is also a humectant,

which attracts water molecules in the skin to

the surface, giving a plumper appearance.

Different strengths of lactic peel can be applied

as you acquire a tolerance to the acid, which

encourages your skin to slough dead cells for a

brighter, fresher appearance.

A glycolic peel contains a higher potency of

alpha hydroxy acid. It can cause some tingling

and pinkness, especially in first-time users,

but skin therapists are adept at matching

ingredient strength to your skin type. As well

as promoting a brighter, fresher appearance,

these peels help fade freckles and sun spots.

Low-concentration lactic or glycolic peels

are available as at-home treatments. While

light peels will help the skin look refreshed

and smoother, they can’t remove deeper lines

and sun damage. For this, a deeper peel is

required, under clinical conditions.

Masks also have a place in a quality skincare

regimen. Using a facial mask can soothe

and nourish skin, oxygenate, improve the

circulation, help clear up blemishes and reduce

the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Tightening masks help firm and tone sagging

skin, and moisturising masks add moisture to

dry or dehydrated skin. For oily or acne-prone

skin, a purifying mask can deep-cleanse skin

and absorb excess oil.

Masks have made a resurgence the past few

years, and for good reason. They are highly

beneficial for most skin types and can give your

complexion a real boost. Generally, they should

be used weekly after exfoliating. CBM

THE HYDRAFACIAL

PHENOMENON

DID YOU KNOW A HYDRAFACIAL TREATMENT IS PERFORMED

SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD EVERY 15 SECONDS? WE CHAT

WITH MAI GUILLOU, FOUNDER OF SKIN TO HEART CLINIC IN

MELBOURNE, ABOUT WHY EVERYONE’S OBSESSING OVER

THIS NEXT-GEN SKIN REJUVENATION TREATMENT.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN

USING HYDRAFACIAL AT SKIN

TO HEART?

I’ve been offering HydraFacial to my clients for the

past 10 years and it has proven to be extremely

popular. We also incorporate it into our two main

signature treatments: our ‘Standard’ treatment

which involves HydraFacial, LED light therapy and

growth factor infusion; and our ‘Elevated’ treatment

which encompasses all of the above, as well as a

deeper peel and an extra rejuvenating mask to

promote further hydration into the tissue.

Mai Guillou, Founder, Skin to Heart, Melbourne

HOW DOES HYDRAFACIAL

WORK?

HydraFacial is an amazing technology that delivers

the results of an advanced facial. It uses patented

vortex technology to deeply cleanse the skin and

effectively deliver botanical ingredients containing

nutrients such as hyaluronic acid, horse chestnut

seed extract, red algae extract, copper, zinc and

magnesium peptides to where they do

the most good.

HydraFacial delivers powerful antioxidants to

help counteract damage by free radicals – from

www.cosbeauty.com.au 59

SKIN

pollution, sun and stress – which can degrade the

skin and accelerate the ageing process.

It delivers the most important steps of a facial; it

cleanses, exfoliates on a chemical and mechanical

level (both are needed for perfect results), extracts,

infuses and rebalances.

HydraFacial has replaced the old-fashioned facials

we once used to perform. It is a non-negotiable in

my clinic and complementary treatments performed

such as lasers, LEDs and peels are performed on top

of HydraFacials.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

FROM TRADITIONAL FACIALS

OR MICRODERMABRASION

TREATMENTS?

A microdermabrasion treatment is used as a

resurfacing modality. The outermost layer of the skin

is polished and exfoliated in order to induce a low

level of inflammation which then in turn induces a

cascade of inflammatory cytokines which promote

collagen production but also a healthier skin and

more uniform, smoother texture.

HydraFacial interacts with the skin on a much more

superficial level and is designed to cause minimal

inflammation through its exfoliating process. It

extracts impurities like blackheads, dirt and oil, and

then it infuses goodness into the skin once it has

been thoroughly deep cleansed.

I am from that older generation that believes that

skin should be first deep cleansed before any other

treatments can be performed. A real artist needs

to treat the skin on a blank and clean canvas first,

before treating anything else, and this is another

reason HydraFacial is so important in our clinic. It is

the foundation of our list of treatments performed in

order to reach the best skin health possible.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT AFTER

TREATMENT?

The immediate results are a hydrated, smooth and

radiant-looking skin. The clean sensation is also

pretty phenomenal and this, I feel, has an impact on

our psyche. We feel cleansed, clearer and in order!

Longer term, in typical cases skin looks clearer and

healthier, is easier to manage, and has a vibrant and

dewy appearance.

3 STEPS TO

GLOWING

SKIN

Suitable for all skin types, HydraFacial

improves the appearance of fine lines,

wrinkles, congested and enlarged

pores, oily or acne-prone skin,

hyperpigmentation and brown spots.

Each 3-step treatment creates an

instant ‘wow factor’ in terms of brighter,

smoother and more radiant skin in just 30

minutes. No downtime required.

STEP 1:

CLEANSE + PEEL

A deep cleanse and gentle exfoliation /

resurfacing to uncover a new layer of skin.

STEP 2:

EXTRACT +

HYDRATE,

A painless vortex extraction device that

removes debris from your pores while

delivering intense moisturisers that

nourish skin.

STEP 3:

FUSE + PROTECT

A patented infusion of hyaluronic

acid, antioxidants and vitamins

that work to restore, plump and

hydrate the complexion.

ANY THINGS WE SHOULD BE

MINDFUL OF?

We recommend not to wash the skin on the day

of treatment. As the skin barrier function has been

slightly impaired, it needs time to heal and we

need to allocate enough time for all the actives

to penetrate deeply into the skin. There will be

a very slight amount of inflammation, not even

noticeable to the naked eye, but it is important to

wait until skin fully heals before reverting back to

normal skincare.

The next day, you can expect the skin to look

radiant, luminous and to feel nourished and

comfortable. In some rare instances, there may

be some peeling but this should should dissipate

after a few days.

CAN ANY SKIN TYPE BENEFIT

FROM HYDRAFACIAL?

WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE

WITH SENSITIVE SKIN OR

BLEMISH-PRONE SKIN?

HydraFacial is beneficial for every skin type and

every skin condition. We are able to regulate

settings and alter the booster infusion for

sensitive, thicker, mature or photodamaged skin.

We can alter many different boosters that will

treat each skin condition; the exfoliating part also

can be tailored depending on how our clients’

skin presents. It is genius.

Our male clientele love HydraFacial treatment

just as much as our female clients as it perfectly

targets skin concerns with no fuss. It can be used

as a straight-to-the-point treatment, without any

oil, and there’s no need to shave.

HydraFacial is also popular amongst teens

and those with blemish-prone skin as its treats

congestion and open and closed comedones

very well.

HydraFacial encompasses everything a facial

should cover, and more. I believe it is able to

optimise our clients’ skin health, and in doing so

also helps to maximise the results of other more

invasive in-clinic treatments. CBM

FEATURE

GUERLAIN

THE EPITOME

OF LUXURY

THROUGHOUT ITS VAST HISTORY,

GUERLAIN HAS CONTINUALLY

REDEFINED THE CONCEPT OF

LUXURY IN EVERY AREA OF BEAUTY.

WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.

My own introduction to Guerlain started when

I was 4 years old. I had gone with my mother

to visit the former family home and, in my late

grandmother’s bedroom, we were greeted by the most

beautiful smell. It was Guerlain’s Jicky, the only perfume

my grandmother ever wore.

This was my first experience with the power of perfume

and its ability to keep a loved one alive forever – as well as

my first experience with the great house of Guerlain. Years

later, I was lucky enough to meet Jean Paul Guerlain and

find out first-hand about this great beauty house.

Guerlain started in 1828 under Pierre Francois Pascal

Guerlain, a chemist, doctor and master perfumer, and

continued with the family for 5 generations until 1994

when it was brought by LVMV. The last of the Guerlains in

the business, Jean Paul Guerlain, was employed by LVMH

until 2010 as one of their master perfumers.

Behind every product they produced was an

understanding that luxury would be at the forefront.

Over time, they have produced 325 different fragrances,

including the first oriental fragrance, Shalimar. They had

many other firsts, including the first bullet-style rollup

lipstick Rouge Automatique in 1936, and Terracotta, the

first makeup bronzer in 1984.

Every single fragrance they have produced has been

housed in a bottle so luxurious and beautiful that it is a

collector’s item. A perfect example, in 2018 for Guerlain’s

190th year, Baccaret joined with Guerlain and produced

L’Abeille Eternelle, housed in the most amazing limitededition

bottle. This was not the first collaboration

between the two leaders in their industries, as Guerlain

constantly strived for true luxury in the final presentation

of all their fragrances.

Guerlain was a very early proponent of the concept

of sustainability. They understood the importance of

merging environmental protection with artistic pursuits

before most other beauty houses. They planted 10,000

orchid plants in China so that they could use them in

their skincare and fragrance products as well as setting

up their own hives to make sure the honey they used in

their products, particularly in their Abeille Royale skincare

line, was constantly being replenished and not being a

drag on the world’s dwindling honey resources. These

hives were set up on Quessant Island in the name of

the Brittany Black Bee Conservation association. Every

year Guerlain helps in the training of beekeepers and

the setting up of hives to keep the industry going long

term. Bees are essential in the growing of 75% of all crops

and in 90% of all flowering plants. As the mortality rate

of bees sits at about 30% yearly, it is so important that

the world does not lose any more bees and their hives.

Guerlain even have their own sustainability team under

Cecile Lochard who is highly regarded in this area.

Next time you purchase a Guerlain product, you will

be reminded that you are also purchasing a part of

beauty history as well as a luxurious product sustainably

produced of the highest quality, as Guerlain produces

nothing less. CBM

REVITALISATION

THE KEY TO THICKER-LOOKING HAIR IS

HEALTHIER-LOOKING HAIR! WE INVESTIGATE

CALECIM ® PROFESSIONAL ADVANCED HAIR

SYSTEM, THE NEW WAY TO REVITALISE HAIR AND

HELP PROMOTE FULLER-LOOKING HAIR.

CALECIM ® Professional, the world’s only

skincare powered by cord lining stem cells, has

revolutionised anti-ageing skincare and postprocedure

care. And now the patented stem

cell technology is also proving to be a game

changer for non-surgical hair revitalisation.

CALECIM ® Professional Advanced Hair

System offers a new solution to help treat

various hair loss conditions, powered by

the same technology that is found in its

popular skincare range. The Advanced Hair

System is developed using a proprietary

technology of ethically derived mesenchymal

stem cells, which in high concentrations have

been shown to help deliver significant, fastacting

benefits.

The specialised hair serum contains a

high concentration of Rejuvenating

Conditioned Media to help promote fullerlooking

hair. This active ingredient works

with in-clinic hair regrowth treatments and

hair transplant procedures by providing a

nutrient-rich micro-environment to help boost

a regenerative response.

The procedure is performed in-clinic and

takes around 20 minutes. An initial course of

6 treatments over 6 weeks is recommended.

HAIR

Q&A with

KELLY MORRELL

FOUNDER OF SCALP CONFIDENTIAL, UK

WHAT ROLE DOES THE HAIR

FOLLICLE PLAY IN HAIR

THINNING?

From the moment we are born, our hair follicles

undergo a repetitive sequence of growth and rest.

This hair cycle consists of the relatively wellknown

anagen, catagen and telogen phases, plus

an additional exogen phase.

The anagen phase typically lasts 3 to 7 years

on average. Approximately 80 to 90% of the hair

follicles should be in this growing phase at any

one time in a healthy head of hair.

There are many often-complex reasons this

cycle is either disrupted or impaired. Factors

such as genes, hormones, stress, medication, diet,

malnutrition, underlying health conditions such

as a thyroid issue or anaemia, the use of styling

chemicals, direct heat and general hair products

can all affect the hair growth cycle and the quality

of hair.

It is quite common to find several of these

contributing factors at any one time. The hair

follicle needs a balance of good blood supply,

healthy connective tissue and balanced hormones.

WHY IS A NUTRIENT-RICH MICRO

ENVIRONMENT IMPORTANT FOR

HAIR FOLLICLES?

Essentially, when the hair growth cycle is

interrupted and the environment is unhealthy,

there are a number of disorders that can occur,

with or without genetic factors present.

Corrective measures which promote antiinflammatory,

antioxidative effects to help

increase cell signalling and fresh oxygenated

blood flow to the area should be considered when

putting together a treatment management plan.

HOW DOES CALECIM ®

PROFESSIONAL ADVANCED

HAIR SYSTEM WORK TO

PROMOTE DENSER, FULLER-

LOOKING HAIR?

CALECIM ® Professional Advanced Hair System

is a stem cell-derived serum containing key

proteins and growth factors to help stimulate,

nourish and condition the appearance of weak

and struggling hair follicles. When infused into

the scalp with a derma stamp or micro needling

device, these powerful proteins are more likely to

provide hair follicle support and visibly condition

the skin on the scalp.

WHAT ARE YOUR CLIENTS

SAYING ABOUT THEIR RESULTS?

My clients’ reactions have been extremely positive;

they report their scalp is less visible, which in

turn builds their confidence. Their hair appears

thicker, shinier, healthier and in better condition.

The hair also appears darker in a lot of cases. CBM

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT

Introducing

ENDYEye

the non-surgical

eye lift

USING THE LATEST IN RADIOFREQUENCY-

BASED TECHNOLOGY, ENDYEYE LIFTS

AND REJUVENATES THE EYE AREA WITHOUT

SURGERY OR INCISIONS.

If frooping eyes, hollowed eyelids,

under-eye bags and etched-in lines and

wrinkles around your eyes are making

you look sad, tired, angry, prematurely

aged or all of the above, you’re not alone.

An inevitability of genetics or age, the area

around our eyes (called the periorbital

region) is one of the first areas to show the

signs of ageing, making this area particularly

popular for treatment.

An upper and/or lower blepharoplasty

(surgical eye lift) can effectively rejuvenate

the eye area, but not all of us are ready or

willing to go down the surgical path.

That’s why we’re excited to talk about

EndyMed, an advanced radiofrequency (RF)

technology changing up the non-surgical

aesthetics industry, and particularly its

ENDYEye procedure for improving tired,

sagging eyes.

Using patented 3DEEP RF

technology (which transmits RF energy

to 3 different depths of the skin with

minimal discomfort), EndyMed delivers

innovative solutions for non-surgical

lifting, tightening, skin resurfacing and

RF microneedling for the eyes, face, neck

and body.

The energy-based device, available as

an in-office treatment at select cosmetic

clinics, uses a variety of handpieces to

deliver different treatment options.

‘EndyMed offers a no-downtime option

for skin tightening, especially for the

delicate eye area,’ says Dr Kate Jameson,

Medical Director at Youth Lab in Perth.

After After

After After

After After

‘The platform allows us to offer

Intensif (microneedling with RF

technology), FSR (fractional skin

resurfacing with RF) and non-invasive

RF (for tissue tightening). This is

effectively 3 different treatments in the

one device, which allows us to target

multiple skin concerns and treat a wider

variety of skin After types,’ After she continues.

‘With EndyMed, we are able to tailor

treatment solutions for a wider range of

patents and offer RF treatments ranging

from zero downtime skin tightening to

an intense Intensif treatment targeting

stretch marks and deep acne scarring. It

is a versatile tool with not only variable

handpiece options but each handpiece

offers its own unique treatment.’

ENDYEYE: THE NEW

WAY TO REJUVENATE EYES

One of the device’s standout procedures is the ‘ENDYEye’ –

which uses a combination of the FSR and iFINE handpieces

specifically designed for the treatment of wrinkles and lax skin

on delicate skin tissue such as the eyes.

ENDYEye treatment can be completely customised to

suit your needs and skin impedance (the way your skin

responds to energy treatment) and any discomfort should be

manageable. Before The procedure has After an After excellent safety profile

and offers no side effects and minimal downtime.

The device’s 3DEEP technology provides volumetric

heating which results in maximum efficacy for reducing

wrinkles and crow’s feet around the eyes, lifting the eyelids,

and reducing under eye bags.

‘Overall, the technology provides for a reliable and

effective treatment, with less trauma to the epidermis, less

discomfort and a comfortable recovery for the patient,’ adds

Dr Jameson. ‘This is a hugely popular option for our patients

and it’s one of our most requested treatment combinations.’

‘Radiofrequency technology has been around for a long

time and that’s because it works. We have a great satisfaction

rate with our EndyMed patients and I am very confident it

will Before continue to offer amazing results After After for our patients,’ she

concludes. CBM

CLINIC SPOTLIGHT

Naturally Beautiful

Cosmetic Clinic

MOUNT WAVERLEY

WE CHAT WITH COSMETIC PHYSICIAN

DR NASHWA BOTROS, THE OWNER,

BRAINS AND BEAUTY BEHIND NATURALLY

BEAUTIFUL BOUTIQUE COSMETIC CLINIC.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO

BECOME AN AESTHETIC

PHYSICIAN?

My inspiration to become an aesthetic

physician started many years ago

when I was working solely in general

practice. I had always been intrigued

by the aesthetic medicine arena,

having had laser treatments and other

cosmetic procedures done previously.

This fuelled my desire to know more

about this field of medicine. My strong

appreciation for art, coupled with my

passion for ongoing learning, drove me

to continue studying and undertake

my fellowships.

Aesthetic medicine has proven

to be an amazing combination of

science and artistry, and I haven’t

looked back since. Each day brings a

new experience, which is what I love.

The aesthetic field can be a problem

solver to a variety of disorders and

conditions.

I am fascinated at how fillers and

anti-wrinkle injections can reshape

the face and how powerful lasers can

rejuvenate the skin in such an amazing

way. The positive transformations and

impact that I can have on someone’s

life makes it so rewarding and confirms

that being an aesthetic physician is the

pathway for me.

WHAT’S YOUR

PHILOSOPHY ON

BEAUTY?

To the eye of the beholder, beauty is

what brings enjoyment and comfort.

For some people, that is visual in terms

of the shape of the eyes, nose, face and

complexion. Real beauty, however, lies

in one’s love, care and compassion. It

lies in an individual’s confidence and

self-respect but most importantly, it lies

within a person’s heart.

For me, beauty is a built-in thing,

it’s innate. It is the inner beauty

which glows from the outside and

truly makes someone beautiful. This

is something that I take with me

into the treatment room. When I’m

formulating a treatment plan, I always

consider how it will make a person feel

in terms of confidence and self-worth.

Each person has a different version

of beauty and requires something a

little different.

Beauty is so subjective and what

is beautiful for one person may not

be for others, which is why I value a

patient’s input. For me, subtle, naturallooking

enhancements are best. In

my treatments, I adopt this natural

approach but customise it to the

individual and their needs. Personally,

I am not a fan of the overdone look

where you can see that an individual

has gone way too far from their

natural beauty.

My treatment approach is a holistic

one. I consistently aim to utilise

the most advanced evidence-based

techniques and technology, simple

explanations, the best products and

just the right quantity of everything.

WHAT TYPES OF

TREATMENTS ARE

OFFERED IN YOUR

CLINIC?

As it is an advanced aesthetic

medical clinic, we offer a wide range

of services, including anti-wrinkle

injections, dermal fillers, collagen

biostimulators, skin needling, a variety

of LED, IPL and laser therapies,

radiofrequency (RF) skin rejuvenation,

non-surgical skin tightening and

lifting, fat-freezing technology for body

contouring, thread lifting, chemical

peels and sclerotherapy.

We also offer a range of skincare

products which are of a high quality.

They have been formulated and

produced by myself, after years of

trial and error. In my products I use

www.cosbeauty.com.au 73

CLINIC SPOTLIGHT

only the purest of ingredients that are

effective and of a high quality in terms

of feel and smell. It is an affordable

range of products prescribed for

different skin types.

WHAT WOULD

YOU SAY IS YOUR

MOST REQUESTED

PROCEDURE?

My most requested procedure as a

doctor are injectables: anti-wrinkle

injections and dermal fillers.

Injectables aside, the Venus Viva

MD treatments are highly sought

after due to the amazing results the

treatment yields. The Venus Viva MD

is a non-invasive nanofractional RF

skin resurfacing device that corrects

signs of skin damage and improves the

appearance of acne scars and other

scars, stretch marks, rosacea, enlarged

pores, deep wrinkles, and uneven skin

texture and pigmentation.

At the clinic, we will often get

people requesting the Venus Viva MD

by name because they’ve either heard

of how fantastic the results are or have

had a treatment years ago with the

device’s predecessor and are looking to

try the new and improved version.

WHICH NON-SURGICAL

PROCEDURES DO YOU

BELIEVE GIVE THE MOST

IMPACT?

This will vary depending on the

patient’s age, concerns and skin

integrity. For ageing and general skin

lifting/plumping, I believe the nonsurgical

procedures which will have

the most impact long term are thread

lifts and collagen biostimulators.

For patients who don’t want to

go down the injectable route,

the Venus Viva MD treatments

yield amazing long-term results in

resurfacing the skin and helping it to

be more tight and plump. For general

skin health, chemical peels coupled

with LED treatments can make a

significant impact.

WHAT DO YOU

RECOMMEND AS THE

BEST STRATEGY FOR AGE

MAINTENANCE/YOUTH

PRESERVATION?

This is multifactorial and depends on

the age of the patient and the degree

of ageing. Generally, the best advice

is to manage stress, sleep well, drink

lots of water, exercise and maintain a

healthy lifestyle.

For younger patients with minimal

lines, a combination of skincare and

skin treatments such as mild chemical

peels work best. Vitamin A (retinol)

is a must, but protecting your skin

from the sun is the most crucial. The

sun can be very destructive on our

skin and can lead to pigment changes

such as age spots, redness and wrinkle

formation down the track.

For mid-to-older clients, in addition

to quality skincare, collagen induction

treatments such as lasers, skin needling

and radiofrequency work well. IPL

treatments for pigment changes are

also very useful for this demographic.

A combined treatment approach

will provide the most optimum

results, utilising skincare and inclinic

treatments such as fractional

radiofrequency and injectables.

WHAT’S YOUR

ADVICE TO ANYONE

CONSIDERING A

COSMETIC TREATMENT?

Do your research. You need to know

who your treating provider is and their

degrees and qualifications. They must

have proper training and recognised

diplomas in aesthetic procedures.

Another important factor to consider

is experience and word of mouth. I

would suggest looking through the

clinic’s website and their social media

platforms. Before and after pictures are

good indicators, alongside reviews, of

what to expect from the clinic you are

looking at for a particular treatment.

Always book in for a consultation

before undergoing any treatment, as

this will allow for your questions to

be answered and concerns/skin to be

assessed appropriately.

ANY NEW TRENDS ON

THE HORIZON?

I think we will see a lot more

combination treatments in the future. It

won’t be just using a single machine in

a treatment to achieve a result – similar

to what Venus Concept has pioneered

with their TriBella protocol which

utilises diamond polar radiofrequency,

followed by IPL and then non-fractional

radiofrequency. I think we will see a lot

more companies coming out with ways

to target a few concerns in one treatment

sitting with multiple devices. I also think

we will see a big push with skincare to be

able to protect from blue light damage

and environmental damage.

We have already started to see skin

minimalism take off this year, but I

think we will see an even bigger shift

towards this. In the post COVID-19

lockdown era, we are seeing more people

wanting minimal makeup, glowing,

hydrated skin and straightforward, loweffort

skincare. People aren’t wanting

anything too fancy or complicated

nowadays, so the simpler and more

natural, the better. CBM

the hype on

SKIN

HYALURONIC

ACID

BELIEVE THE HYPE. HYALURONIC

ACID IS ONE OF THE HARDEST-

WORKING AND MOST VERSATILE

SKINCARE INGREDIENTS, WRITES

RICKY ALLEN.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is found naturally in the

body, in the joints, skin and even the fluid in

the eyes. It is a substance that retains moisture

(a humectant) and it can bind up to 1,000 times its

weight in water – which gives it super hydration powers.

For the skin, HA holds water molecules onto the

epidermis, the surface layer of the skin, to help keep

it looking and feeling hydrated. Plus, as it’s already

found abundantly in the body, chance of a reaction to

an HA-based product is uncommon and it is generally

tolerated well, even on those with sensitive skins.

As we age, the levels of hyaluronic acid in our body

dwindles, manifesting in lines and wrinkles, sagging

skin and uneven, dry skin tone and texture. Because

of its ability to give the look of ultra-hydrated skin, in

turn skin appears plumper and lines and wrinkles are

less noticeable. It’s no wonder, then, that HA-based

products have become the darling of the skincare and

beauty industries and taken centre stage in a variety of

formulations – from serums and masks to moisurisers

and even hair products.

Brand spotlight:

L’OREAL PARIS

The L’Oreal Paris scientific research team spent many

years studying hyaluronic acid to create a potent, stable

and efficacious delivery of HA when applied topically.

Today, the L’Oreal Paris range of HA products is

continually being refined and it now extends to skincare,

makeup and haircare.

At the heart of the L’Oreal Paris Hyaluronic Acid

range of products is Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid

1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum. It is said that one of these

products sells every 30 seconds somewhere in the world –

such is its popularity and efficacy. The product is rapidly

absorbed, giving a non-greasy but plumply hydrated finish,

diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It

contains two forms of patented hyaluronic acid at different

molecular weights.

Next is the Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid 2.5%

Anti-Aging Eye Serum. It contains 1.5% pure hyaluronic

acid as well as 1% pure caffeine. It is able to diminish the

appearance of dark circles, and plump and smooth the

delicate area around the eyes. The triple roller applicator

allows for a massage effect to also help noticeably depuff

the under-eye area.

Extending into cosmetics, L’Oreal Paris True Match

Nude Plumping Tinted Serum is a true makeup and

skincare hybrid, containing the plumping power of 1%

hyaluronic acid. It comes in nine different shades, which

are able to be blended onto various skin tones, delivering a

flawless dewy finish to the skin.

L’Oreal then decided to develop hair care with the same

hydrating abilities using their hyaluronic acid technology –

first came Elvive Hyaluron Plump Shampoo + Conditioner

with hyaluronic acid, followed by the leave-in serum,

moisture wrapping mask and finally the leave-in spray. The

products provide a deep hydrating layer on the hair cuticle

that nourishes hair with 72 hours of extra moisture. This

moisture leaves the hair looking shiny and feeling much

softer, enhancing moisture levels up to 10 times.

We can look forward to more HA-based products

as scientists continue to discover the endless wealth of

benefits this amazing molecule has to offer. CBM

COUPLES MY

ACADEMIC INTERESTS

IN THE SCIENCES

WITH MY PERSONAL

PASSION FOR

SKINCARE

SkinCeuticals has been behind some of the most

pivotal skincare discoveries in recent history. Why is

ongoing research so important in skincare?

Ongoing research is so important at SkinCeuticals

because it is our path to innovation. SkinCeuticals

is always seeking out highly efficacious ingredients

with interesting mechanisms of action for our next

breakthrough. As a brand focused on medical integrated

skincare with a professional-centric approach, we’re

always looking to the future of health as we try to

anticipate the needs of our patients and our physicians.

Which products have you personally developed?

I have personally worked on the development of

Micropeel Solution for Sensitive Skin, which is a

professional chemical peel designed to be mild enough

for sensitive skin. This particular product was complex

due to its high level of acids, as well as its high level of

chamomile and sage extracts. As extracts are natural

substances, they are accompanied by impurities which

we had to figure out how to address. I have a couple of

patents in the works as well, so watch this space!

Can you talk us through the process and formulation

behind SkinCeuticals’ Vitamin C serums?

The process and formulation behind SkinCeuticals’

Vitamin C serums is not an easy one. Vitamin C is

a very difficult ingredient to formulate with. It is

inherently unstable. The stability of Vitamin C is

impacted by several factors such as heat, air and light.

At SkinCeuticals, we perform many trials to test the

stability of our Vitamin C formulas. We analyse the

level of Vitamin C under extreme conditions at various

timepoints to ensure we have minimised the degradation

of Vitamin C to provide optimal efficacy over the course

of the shelf life of each product.

What do you use in your own daily skincare routine?

I start off with Gentle Cleanser. I love it because it’s so

mild and softening and my skin can be sensitive. Then,

I follow with C E Ferulic because we all need protection

from the environmental aggressors we face day-to-day

and CEF does it best. And finally, Sheer Physical UV

Defense because sun protection is so important, and I

love how lightweight this one feels.

What are your career highlights? (so far!)

As a chemist for SkinCeuticals, I love to see the fruits of

my labour culminate in a product that people can use

and benefit from. This was always the ideal place for

me to be because it couples my academic interests in

the sciences with my personal passion for skincare. I’ve

had challenges with my own skin and know it can really

take a toll on self-confidence. So, being able to develop

products that will help others with the same challenges

highlights all else.

What’s next for you and SkinCeuticals?

SkinCeuticals recognises the consistent increase in

visits to physicians for skincare treatments globally and

our goal is to elevate that experience. The pandemic

has led to a heightened curiosity about health, and

at SkinCeuticals we will continue to look to the future

of health to anticipate the needs of our patients and

physicians. This way, at the end of the day, the best

results you can get are from visiting SkinCeuticals

physicians. CBM

I’VE HAD CHALLENGES WITH MY OWN SKIN

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT

RHINOPLAST

explained

RHINOPLASTY IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND INTRICATE

PROCEDURES THAT CAN COMPLETELY RESHAPE YOUR FACE.

The nose is the central feature of your face and plays

a key role in facial symmetry. Any abnormalities will

affect the overall aesthetics of the face, and changing

the size or shape of the nose to bring it into harmony

and balance with the rest of the face can be a lifealtering

event – both physically and psychologically.

Rhinoplasty, aska nose surgery or a nose job, is

consistently one of the most popular facial cosmetic

surgery procedures in Australia (eyelid surgery, or

blepharoplasty, usually takes the top spot).

Rhinoplasty’s enduring popularity is world-wide. A

June 2020 report by money.co.uk revealed queries

relating to “rhinoplasty” were the most popular

cosmetic search item in Europe in the past 12 months.

Y

www.cosbeauty.com.au 83

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT

w

HAT CAN

RHINOPLASTY DO?

Rhinoplasty improves the appearance and proportion

of the nose, enhancing overall facial aesthetics and

harmony. Surgery of the nose may also be performed

to remove deviations caused by a birth defect or injury,

or correct impaired breathing caused by structural

abnormalities in the nose.

Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the

nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the

span of the nostrils or change the angle between the

nose and upper lip.

Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to balance it with other

facial features. There are two main techniques – open

(incision made at the base of the nose) and closed

(incisions inside nose) – that can change the size of the

nose, remove a hump, narrow the nostrils, change the

angle and/or refine the tip.

RHINOPLASTY, OR

NOSE SURGERY,

IMPROVES THE

APPEARANCE AND

PROPORTION OF THE

NOSE, ENHANCING

OVERALL FACIAL

AESTHETICS AND

HARMONY.

WHAT HAPPENS

DURING NOSE

SURGERY?

Generally, incisions are made inside the nasal

cavity and often at the base of the nose. The

skin of the nose is then separated from its

framework of cartilage and bone.

To reduce nose size, some cartilage in the

middle of the nose (septum) is removed until

the desired size is achieved. To build up the

nose, cartilage and bone may be added to

increase its size. Changing the tip or bridge

and the nose angle is achieved by reshaping

the cartilage and soft tissue. Nostril span is

narrowed via small incisions at the base of

each nostril.

The incisions are sutured closed and a splint

or cast is applied to help the nose maintain its

shape and expedite healing. The procedure

normally takes around two to three hours.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under

general anaesthesia.

Nasal packing, in which gauze or cotton

packs are applied to the nasal chambers, is

used to support the new structure and prevent

bleeding. The packing is typically removed

within 24-48 hours after surgery.

Most patients experience some mild to

moderate discomfort after rhinoplasty for a

few days. Any pain can generally be controlled

through medication prescribed by the surgeon.

About 80 percent of the swelling is usually

gone within a week or two. Swelling starts to

resolve more slowly after that. The majority of

swelling disappears after around two months

and the rest slowly disappears over the next

year, when final results become apparent.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 85

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT

DIFFERENT

TYPES OF

RHINOPLASTY

PROCEDURES

Open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty

are generally the two types of rhinoplasty

procedures available.

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions

on the inside of the nose. Although

this results in no visible scarring, the

procedure offers less visibility of the

inside of the nose and is typically not

possible for more complex cases.

During open rhinoplasty, a small

incision is made on the columella (the

strip between the nostrils). This results

in a fine, well-concealed scar that shoud

fade over time. The surgeon will help the

patient decide which is most suitable.

NON-SURGICAL

OPTIONS

Non-surgical rhinoplasty uses fillers to correct

minor external nasal deformities, depressions,

asymmetries, collapsed nasal bridges and

saddle noses. It can also be an effective

technique for making corrections post-surgery

where the results of earlier rhinoplasty have

been unsatisfactory or need a slight tweak.

A relatively quick procedure, non-surgical

rhinoplasty requires no anaesthesia and

involves no downtime. Most fillers will leave

a residual redness and slight tenderness for

up to a few days and patients can expect

slight swelling and bruising. The results are

immediately evident and can last up to a year.

R

HINOPLASTY

RESULTS

Results of rhinoplasty are not immediate.

The nose becomes more refined with

better definition over time, and may

take up to a year for final results. Most

patients can expect to return to work

within a week or two and to more

strenuous activity after a few weeks.

Benefits of this procedure can range

from improved breathing to enhanced

appearance and self-confidence.

Rhinoplasty can offer subtle or dramatic

changes to a person’s appearance.

Often even a small change in the shape

and position of the nose can create a

significant difference to overall facial

aesthetics.

Revision rhinoplasty is necessary

in around five to 10 percent of cases.

While some may require only minor

adjustments, others may need major

modification, and may be a result of

too much or too little bone, cartilage or

tissue having been removed, resulting in

a nose that is too large or too small for

the face.

Although techniques for any

rhinoplasty surgery may differ, as well

as the patient’s desired results and the

surgeon’s personal preference, there

is no doubt that a well-performed

rhinoplasty has the potential to

dramatically improve the appearance of

both the nose and the entire face. CBM

FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY CONTINUES TO

SKYROCKET, ACCORDING TO ANNUAL SURVEY

RESULTS FROM THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF

FACIAL PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY.

Results from the American

Academy of Facial Plastic

and Reconstructive Surgery

(AAFPRS), the world’s largest

association of facial plastic surgeons,

2021 member survey saw catapulting

demand for facial plastic surgery and

aesthetic procedures as in-person events

and face-to-face socialisation resumed,

despite lingering pandemic concerns.

A staggering 83 percent of AAFPRS

members say 75 percent or more of their

work is facial plastic surgery, up from 75

percent of surgeons reporting on the

trend in 2020.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 89

FEATURE

The central thread of the results intimates that after

two years of cancelled plans and over-analysing their

faces on ZOOM, people are ready to invest in selfimprovement,

regain confidence and shake off the

sense of languishing dread that has dominated the

collective consciousness throughout the pandemic.

‘After lockdowns ended and vaccinations rolled

out, our patients who had been postponing

reconstructive work, upkeep, maintenance or surgery

were eager to schedule treatments to help them

feel refreshed, confident and ready to take on work,

events, playdates – all of those things that were

previously paused. Plus, with more time still being

spent at home, there was less concern about the

recovery time for surgical treatments,’ said AAFPRS

President Corey S. Maas, MD.

The now culturally ingrained desire to look better

in selfies also continues to trend up, with 77 percent

of members reporting this as a driving factor for

patients – up 35 percent overall since the AAFPRS

first identified the ‘selfie-awareness’ trend in 2016.

MILLENNIAL TAKEOVER

CONTINUES AND THE GENDER

GAP INCHES CLOSER

Patients aged 56 or older represent a lower

percentage of overall procedures in 2021. The most

common surgical procedure among patients under

age 34 is rhinoplasty, which remains consistent with

previous years.

Women continue to be the most likely patients

for facial plastic surgery, but the industry is slowly

becoming more balanced. Blepharoplasty and

neurotoxins are trending towards more balance

between genders, with a lower percentage of

surgeons indicating these procedures are performed

on ‘mostly females’.

The top procedures performed most often on

women in 2021 include neurotoxins (63 percent),

fillers (57 percent), and rhinoplasty (62 percent). Hair

transplantation is the only procedure for which men

far surpass women, and is gaining popularity. In

2021, surgeons were almost five times more likely to

indicate that hair transplantation was a top procedure

for males, compared to 2020. The top procedures

for male patients are rhinoplasty (79 percent),

neurotoxins (58 percent) and blepharoplasty

(42 percent).

LIP LIFTS & LASER ON THE RISE

Lip lifts, a new category for the 2021 survey, were

performed by at least 70 percent of AAFPRS surgeons

in 2021. This could point to growing filler fatigue as

patients veer away from the pillowy, overfilled ‘reality

TV lips’ to other options.

The demand for laser treatments is also up over 10

percent from 2021 vs 2020, indicating that healthylooking,

clear and even-toned skin remains a patient

priority, as the ways in which, and how often, we wear

makeup has evolved.

Demand for facelifts, eyelid surgery, neck lifts and

brow lifts are also significantly up from previous years,

further supporting the AAFPRS’ theory that more

schedule flexibility, ability for downtime and masking,

all likely have an influence on patient pandemic

behaviours. CBM

the numbers

According to AAFPRS members, the total number

of surgical and non-surgical facial plastic surgery

treatments is up dramatically. An estimated 1.4 million

surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed

in the US in the past year, with plastic surgeons

performing an average of 600 more procedures than

they did in 2020, a 40 percent increase.

Furthermore, 83 percent of AAFPRS surgeons saw

an increase in bookings over the course of the last year

(up from 70 percent from 2020). Surgical procedures

(rhinoplasty, facelift, blepharoplasty) are the most

common procedures as part of this upsurge, but the

demand for non-surgical treatments grew as well.

surgery in 2021

The Aesthetic Society (American Society for

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) has also released

its annual statistics. The data demonstrates

a significant increase for face, breast and

body procedures. Overall, aesthetic body

procedures, including abdominoplasty,

buttock augmentation and liposuction,

increased by 63% since 2020. Breast

procedures such as breast augmentation,

augmentation/ breast lift and breast

lift/reductions were up 48%, and face

procedures including brow lifts and face lifts

increased 54% last year.

The data illustrates a possible effect of

life amid the global pandemic, with many

Aesthetic Society members attributing

the ubiquity of video meetings and more

downtime to patients undergoing more

surgical face and body procedures.

KEY FINDINGS OF THE 2021

AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGERY STATISTICS

Surgical procedures increased 54%

and non-surgical was up 44%.

THE AVERAGE PLASTIC SURGEON PERFORMED 320 SURGICAL

PROCEDURES IN 2021, COMPARED WITH 220 IN 2020.

On average, the cost of a surgical procedure

increased 6% in 2021, and the cost of a

non-surgical procedure increased 1%.

Women accounted for

approximately 94% of

all procedures.

There were 365,000 breast augmentations performed in

2021 (+44%) in the US. In addition, 148,000 women had

implants removed and replaced (+32% from 2020), and

71,000 had their implants removed and not

replaced (+47%).

LISTEN TO YOUR GUT – IT’S

PROBABLY TRYING TO TELL

YOU SOMETHING.

Right now there are millions

and trillions of bacteria, fungi

and viruses living inside your

intestines. Sounds gross, but

these little guys are pretty important and

they have powerful benefits for almost

every aspect of your health. Your gut can

effectively change your life.

There’s no denying that gut health

is one of the hottest topics in health

and wellbeing today. And for good

reason. While it may be one of most

unglamorous organs, the gut can have a

profound effect on your overall physical

and mental health and wellbeing.

Attention has recently been turned to

the links between the microbes that live

in your gut and your health – including

their influence on our weight and our

immune system and how what we

eat can encourage a healthy diverse

population in our guts.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 95

FEATURE

Gut health is important for many

reasons, but one of the primary

factors that make it so important is

that without good gut health, you’re

unlikely to be efficiently absorbing

the nutrients you ingest. Your gut

bacteria are important in helping to

produce micronutrients (like vitamins

and antioxidants) from the food

you eat, as well as breaking down

macronutrients (carbohydrates,

proteins and fats) to ease digestion

and keep your colon healthy.

It seems like every symptom of

poor health can be traced back

to the gut. A whopping 60-80% of

your immune system is located in

your gut and imbalances have been

linked to hormonal imbalances,

autoimmune diseases, diabetes,

chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia,

anxiety, depression, eczema, rosacea

and other chronic health problems.

According to the Gut Foundation,

in the past 12 months around half

the Australian population will have

complained about some kind of

digestive problem.

Simply changing the way you eat

and fixing the underlying imbalances

in your gut can sometimes treat

these conditions faster and more

effectively than medications, which

are often used as a first resort rather

than a last one. So, how do you

keep your gut happy?

SIMPLY CHANGING THE WAY

YOU EAT AND FIXING THE

UNDERLYING IMBALANCES IN

YOUR GUT CAN SOMETIMES

TREAT THESE CONDITIONS

FASTER AND MORE EFFECTIVELY

THAN MEDICATIONS.

g

ut healing

gAnyone can benefit from improving

Anyone can benefit from improving

their gut health, because a well-

balanced gut makes it easier to lose

and manage your weight. So, before

you sit down for your next meal,

you may want to put your tastebuds

on the backburner and focus on

feeding your gut bacteria!

A good rule of thumb to keep

your gut healthy is to eat a wide

variety of nutritious wholefoods

from all food groups, which would

naturally contain a lot of plant foods

that are beneficial for your gut

bacteria.

One of the best kinds of food

for good gut health is fermented

foods (kimchi, red beets, apple

cider vinegar, yoghurt), which are

overflowing with good bacteria

(probiotics) that support our immune

defences. They also help to break

down foods we might otherwise find

difficult to digest.

The second way you can improve

your microbiome is through

prebiotics: non-living organisms

found in food that reach the large

intestine unaffected by digestion.

Prebiotics are types of dietary fibres

and found in foods like legumes,

onions, cabbage, garlic, asparagus,

oats, barley and beans.

However, be warned: upping

your probiotic intake by taking

supplements without fuelling your

body with nutritious food (full of

prebiotics) is essentially useless. You

www.cosbeauty.com.au 97

FEATURE

can nab as many live bacteria as

you want, but if you’re eating bad

things that are going to damage the

environment that those probiotics

live in, they’re not going to survive.

So, with a high-fibre diet and

fermented foods in, what’s out? For

starters, you need to put a stop to

junk food. Too much fat and sugar

is a big no-no. This is because high

fat changes the balance of the

carbohydrate-digesting bacteria, so

you become less good at digesting

carbohydrates and breaking down

energy with your bacteria. Put

simply, eat bad foods and you

will support bad communities of

bacteria.

Diets containing too much meat

are also a potential issue because

they’re likely to be high in fat and

can often mean the displacement of

fruit and vegetables.

While small amounts of

alcohol can have its benefits

(depending which study you read),

overconsumption is definitely bad

for your gut and too much of it

can induce dysbiosis (a microbial

imbalance).

The key to preventing and even

reversing these problems is to

change our views on healthy eating

and lifestyle. This does not mean

crash diets, but rather just eating

healthy food and watching your

intake of sugars and fats. The reward

is good health and energy, and

you do feel better! What’s there to

really

going on

inside your

stomach?

Increasing research has revealed

the previously mysterious world

of the gut and the 1-2 kilograms

of microbes that live in there,

which form each person’s unique

microbiome.

A microbiome is the genetic

ecosystem of bacteria, viruses, fungi

and other organisms that lives inside

and on our bodies from birth. Our

gut (and microbiome) is connected

to the brain, via over 100 million

neurons spread all the way from our

throat to our rectum.

Interestingly, our brain isn’t the

only organ in control of emotions –

95 percent of serotonin, the body’s

happy hormone – is created in the

gut. This has led researchers to

increasingly find links between our

gut microbiome and things like our

mood and food cravings, potentially

revealing massive changes to how we

approach treatment for depression

and anxiety.

UPCYCLING

AS SUSTAINABILITY

GOALS IN THE

BEAUTY AND

WELLNESS

INDUSTRIES

ADVANCE, MANY

COMPANIES ARE

LOOKING AT

OPPORTUNITIES TO

UPCYCLE PRECIOUS

INGREDIENTS.

WORDS BY ANA PRIETO,

QUINTIS PRODUCT

MANAGER

Synonymous with ritualism and

spirituality, the use of sandalwood

in incense has been part of life

since ancient times due to its striking,

natural and long-lasting fragrance.

Sandalwood is a preferred material in

incense during meditation and rituals

as it’s known to calm the mind while

still allowing the person to remain

alert. For those who favour its mythical

and therapeutic qualities, the spiritual

significance takes shape as the burning

represents the incineration of negativity

to reveal the pure self.

Given the scarcity of certain precious

natural ingredients – including Indian

sandalwood which was included on the

International Union for Conservation of

Nature’s vulnerable species list in 1998

due to illegal poaching and harvesting –

looking for alternative ways to maximise

use of materials and repurpose or

reduce waste has become a top priority

for many companies.

Leading global producer Quintis owns

and manages one of the largest Indian

sandalwood estates in the world and,

over the past 20 years, has remained

committed to producing Indian

sandalwood in a sustainable and natural

way, ensuring this versatile ingredient is

available for generations to come.

A WAVE OF

INNOVATION IN THE

CLEAN BEAUTY SPACE

With sustainability increasingly at the

forefront of beauty, personal care

and aromatherapy industries, new

possibilities are being uncovered for

materials that once would have been

waste. One area making great strides

in this regard is upcycling green waste

as ingredients, in particular using

spent charge as a core component of

sustainable incense production.

Spent charge, also known as

sandalwood residue, is the exhausted

biomass created during the oil

distillation process when obtaining

sandalwood oil. This residue has

traditionally been known as an industrial

by-product that was simply discarded

as green waste or boiler feed after the

steam distillation process.

Instead of disposing of the exhausted

biomass, ongoing research and

innovation by Quintis has unlocked the

potential for grouping this as spent

charge. By re-purposing it to create

incense products, Quintis has been

able to reduce waste and, more

than that, continued to add value to

sandalwood operations.

More than a passing trend,

upcycling spent charge is a vital way

for Quintis to make better use of the

earth’s resources and reduce their

impact on the environment.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 101

WHEN IT COMES TO DEFORESTATION, SPENT CHARGE ALSO

PROVIDES AN ECONOMICAL ALTERNATIVE TO OTHER WOOD

PRODUCTS USUALLY SOURCED FROM TROPICAL RAINFORESTS

THROUGH UNSUSTAINABLE PRACTICES.

FEATURE

SANDALWOOD

RESIDUE HELPING IN

THE CONSERVATION

OF NATURAL FOREST

RESOURCES

In a detailed proprietary process, Quintis

have refined over a number of years, the

spent charge (residue) is extracted from

the distillation stills and air dried until the

moisture content reduces to the optimal

conditions, before being ground into a

fine powder and blended with binding

materials to make the final incense

product.

When gently burnt as an incense, spent

charge has a different scent profile to the

pure heartwood or distilled essential oil

and releases the residual essential oils and

other semi-volatiles.

These molecules give a strong, spicy,

caramel, amber-like aroma to the spent

charge in incense, making it a valued and

unique material. The burning process

also creates pyrogenic molecules from

the wood with a characteristic smoky and

woody aroma.

While pure sandalwood heartwood

aroma is prized in fragrance and widely

valued in incense and aromatherapy,

the versatility of spent charge and its

extensive usage is still being discovered.

The re-purposed spent charge in incense

products produces a very captivating and

appealing fragrance, leaving consumers

with a different sensory experience.

In addition to 100% of the materials from

the distillation process being upcycled

and therefore making this process zero

waste, when it comes to deforestation,

spent charge also provides an economical

alternative to other wood products usually

sourced from tropical rainforests through

unsustainable practices.

PUTTING THE FOCUS

ON HOW AND WHERE

THE MATERIALS ARE

RECLAIMED

The rigorous distillation technology

and the efficient methods within the

upcycling process allow for much of

the essential oil to be extracted. The

total oil content is typically less than

0.5% of total spent charge weight but,

upon burning, the essential oil trapped

in the spent charge gets released

through evaporation to produce a

sandalwood aroma

As an example of distillation

efficiency, Quintis developed a worldfirst

commercial Continuous Steam

Distillation plant in 2021. This fully

automated process allows Quintis

to produce greater volumes of oil

at greater speeds – four times more

oil with the same volume of steam –

reducing the company’s water and

energy usage by 75%.

With the ongoing demand for

more sustainable products, incense

manufacturers are increasingly relying

heavily on forest products for their raw

materials. Quintis is beginning to see a

trend developing from traditional and

niche incense manufacturers for this

unique ingredient, and we expect they

will continue to be looking for products

created through sustainable practices.

Quintis’s distillation process

allows these manufacturers the

opportunity to include the unique,

distinct aroma and physical properties

of the residue in their products, while

supporting customers to reach their

sustainability goals.

While the process of upcycling is not

entirely new to the incense industry, it is

another avenue towards sustainability.

For consumers craving products and

experiences that stimulate the senses

to bring physical pleasure and mental

tranquillity, the olfactory qualities of

spent charge in incense sticks creates an

incredible and unique essence.

Indian sandalwood spent charge is

developing as a product of its own with

a distinct odour profile and physical

properties. These sensory attributes

allow more mindfulness and a unique

fragranced environment. CBM

Like most worthy things in life, having

just-walked-out-of-a-salon hair is about

the prep work. Start with washing your

hair with a hydrating shampoo and

conditioner. Before blowdrying, apply

a leave-in treatment to add moisture to

your hair. Always apply a heat protectant

before letting your precious strands get

with a shine spray for that added glam

factor. And if you don’t already sleep on

a silk pillowcase, here’s another reason to

make the switch: in addition to helping

prevent skin creases, a silk pillowcase

can help hair retain moisture and reduce

the frizzies.

BEAUTY

A good-quality brush is as essential as

shampoo and conditioner. Brushing

your hair helps activate healthy blood

circulation and stimulate hair growth.

It also redistributes oil from the scalp

to help keep the outer layer of the hair

smooth and shiny.

Selecting the right hair brush

depends on the style you’re going

for and your hair type. If you’re after

sleek and smooth locks with a boost

of shine, opt for a paddle brush. These

smoothing brushes often have boar or

nylon bristles which reduce static so

the cuticles of the hair lie flat, making

it the perfect choice for achieving the

professional salon look at home.

For a bombshell blowout, a round

brush is the grand dame. Vent holes

in the brush allow the heat from the

hairdryer to circulate at the roots and

add more volume. Take it one step

further with a ceramic round brush

– this heats up when you use it with

a hair dryer, styling your locks into

bouncy soft curls or waves (depending

on the size of the brush).

As the saying goes, behind every good hair

day is a good hairdryer. Okay, we totally

made that up, but a dependable hairdryer

is up there with a good hairdresser. Today’s

versions are feats of engineering that can

make your blowout experience quick and

easy with impressive results.

A high-powered flat iron is also a hair

staple. They can create sleek styles on just

about every hair type and texture. They

help to tame the frizzies and achieve the

look of silky, glossy hair. A ceramic flat iron

is typically best for finer hair, while titanium

straighteners are recommended for taming

thick, course or curly hair.

A curling iron is my personal OG of hair

stylers. Curling irons or tongs make waves,

crimps and curls a breeze. Choosing the

right one for you will depend on your hair

type and the curl you want to achieve – in

general, the smaller the barrel, the tighter

the curl. CBM
