From the

EDITOR

W

elcome to our 89th edition of COSBEAUTY Magazine! The beauty

industry has long advocated self-care and positivity and, amidst the

ongoing COVID-19, there has never been a more important time to

pamper ourselves and look after our general well-being.

Beauty is about creativity and self-expression, and indulging in beauty rituals

and home spa experiences can help us switch off, find comfort and feel better about

ourselves. To get you started, check out our ‘Ultimate Staycation Guide’ on page

28 – we’ve curated some of our favourite sensory products that will help satisfy your

wanderlust without leaving home.

With more time spent at home, social media usage is also on the rise. While we love

a good selfie as much as the next person, it’s important to differentiate reality vs filter.

‘Ready, set, selfie’ on page 58 is a fascinating article by body image researcher Roberta

Honigman on the danger of losing touch with our real appearance and obsessing over

the filtered image version of ourselves. We also get a plastic surgeon’s perspective on

how selfies and celebrities are influencing our perception of beauty and changing the

landscape of cosmetic enhancement (page 64).

The cooler months are the perfect time to take stock of your skincare routine. In our

articles ‘Skincare essentials’ (page 42) and ‘Body routine for super-soft skin’ (page 100),

we look at the steps and products to achieve glowing skin on the face and body (yes,

even in winter). We also highlight the huge boom in sheet masks on page 88 and share

the best-in-class products to de-stress, detox and beautify your skin.

Unleash your creativity with our cult list of makeup must-haves on page 68. These are

the transforming products every makeup lover should have in their kit. We also examine

the many types of lip products (page 78) – from the OG lipstick to the lip stain – and

showcase our favourite bronzers and illuminators to flaunt the best faux glow (page 92).

On a more serious note, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which helps to

increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment of this

desease. Our article on page 110 explains ways to decrease your risk and emphasises the

importance of self-checking during COVID-19, as statistics show a

30 percent drop in referrals to cancer specialists during this time.

Don’t forget – you can find more great articles on beauty and wellbeing at

www.cosbeauty.com.au, as well as unbiased information on cosmetic enhancement

at www.aestheticadvisor.com.au. Enjoy and stay safe!

Biologi, the brand know for its

Biologi have had the Aussie

with the founders believing

Samantha epitomises everything

the brand represents: multi-faceted,

inspiring and strong.

‘Biologi is a brand that I personally

use on my own skin, so working with

them was a natural choice in that

regard, however as a brand they are

so much more than just skincare,’

says Samantha.

‘They are one of the only

brands in the world that offer

plant-to-bottle skincare, with a

focus on using single Australian

natives that are sourced locally,

ethically and sustainably. As a

educating their consumers on

importantly, they focus on

empowering their customers to feel

good in their own skin.’

Samantha catapulted onto the

NEW ACNE PRODUCT

DEMONSTRATES A REDUCTON IN

BLEMISHES BY 51%

Sensitive skincare specialist,

LA ROCHE-POSAY, has unveiled

the latest innovation in its acne

skincare solutions range, continuing a

commitment to improving the quality

of life for people with acne-prone

skin. Effaclar Micro-Peeling Purifying

Gel is a new face and body cleanser

for acne-prone skin, scientifically

proven to be effective in reducing

the appearance of acne as well as the

breakout recurrence of blemishes on

the face, back and chest.

Research shows that 80% of

teenagers and 40% of adults

worldwide are affected by acne, with

almost all (97%) of acne patients

reporting a reduced quality of life.

The demand for an anti-acne body

treatment is also evident, with twothirds

of people with acne-prone skin

admitting to also suffering from back

and/or chest acne, and a staggering

185 million Google searches annually

for back acne solutions.

Pimples on the body are

particularly difficult to address, as the

skin is up to five times thicker than

the face and more difficult to reach,

especially on the back. Formulated

with a high concentration of peeling

ingredients, Effaclar Micro-Peeling

Purifying Gel is able to gently but

effectively, micro-exfoliate the thick

layers of skin, and produce visible

results in even the toughest areas, to

promote healthier looking skin.

Effaclar Micro-Peeling Purifying Gel

features the highest percentage of

salicylic acid (2%) in the LA ROCHE-

POSAY Effaclar range, which in

combination with LHA and zinc,

micro-exfoliates the skin, unclogs

pores from dead skin cells and helps

diminish the secretion of sebum.

The addition of glycerin as another

key ingredient, ensures the cleanser

provides maximum comfort and

promotes a smoother skin texture

that appears less oily, yet purified

and detoxified. Formulated with a

physiological pH, Effaclar Micro-

Peeling Purifying Gel respects the

skin barrier, and in turn, enables

suitability for even sensitive skin.

RECYCLE & RETHINK BEAUTY

WITH L’OCCITANE

Did you know the pumps, caps and

tubes of your most loved beauty

product packaging are not usually

considered as recyclable by standard

at-home recycling services? The

reality is that these items usually end

up in dumpsters and landfills even

when put in your recycling bin. The

team at L’OCCITANE are actively

taking steps to reduce this and

all waste created from beauty

product packaging.

L’OCCITANE are committed to

protecting the environment and

reducing waste. The Group has

a goal that by 2025 100% of their

bottles will be made from 100%

recycled plastic. In Australia, the

brand has been a proud partner

of TerraCycle since 2016, making

them the first beauty brand to

launch a program. In every one

of L’OCCITANE’s 56 boutiques in

Australia, you can dispose of

your beauty product packaging

(from L’OCCITANE or any beauty

brand) and they’ll ship it to the

TerraCycle warehouse for recycling.

What’s more, when you do so they’ll

give you 10% off your next like for

like purchase.

L’OCCITANE’s recycling efforts

don’t end in store. They are proud to

share they are the the main partner

of the Plastic Odyssey expedition,

a three-year round-the-world

expedition beginning in January

2021 that will give plastic waste a

second life while fighting against

poverty. The vessel is a ‘recycling

laboratory’ which aims to share

information about accessible plastic

waste recycling techniques.

Using fuel derived from plastic

waste converted by pyrolysis, the

Plastic Odyssey vessel will take

its crew – 20 engineers, sailors,

anthropologists, entrepreneurs and

volunteers – to more than 30 ports

across the most polluted coasts

of Africa, Latin America and Asia.

During each leg of the journey,

plastic waste will be collected, sorted

and recycled on board with the aim

of raising awareness. The approach

will draw the public’s attention to

the problem of plastic waste in the

oceans, demonstrate the value of

this waste once transformed into a

new resource, and share simple and

accessible recycling techniques.

L’OCCITANE is financing the

expedition as well as the educational

resources used during the Plastic

Odyssey’s stopovers. This is part of

the brand’s efforts to achieve its vision

of a circular economy which gives a

second life to polluting materials.

TAKE ME TO Tahiti

BEAUTY

Blue lagoons, white-sand beaches, island

time. Who’s with me? The Islands of

Tahiti have long been revered as pockets

of paradise, filled with soft white-sand

beaches, warm tropical breezes and the

smell of fresh Taha’a vanilla. And while

we may not be able to jet to these idyllic

archipelagos just yet, creating a space

that replicates one of the most incredible

places on earth is definitely do-able.

First, find yourself a deliciously

decadent vanilla-scented candle. Scent

plays a big role in transporting you to

a blissful destination. A vanilla candle

captures the essence of Tahiti – Taha’a,

which is one of the 118 Islands of Tahiti,

is known locally as the Vanilla Island

because of the vast vanilla plantations

and the gorgeous natural smell that

surrounds the area. The scent is used in

Tahitian spas and with a candle you can

bring it right into your home.

Source some frangipani and hibiscus

(really, any tropical flower) to add a

touch of Tahiti to your home, and fill

your ears with the sound of paradise

by turning on your favourite chill out

summer playlist. Better yet, check out

The Islands of Tahiti playlist on Spotify.

& MONOI BODY

EXFOLIATOR

INGREDIENTS

Grated flesh of half a coconut

(or half a cup of coconut flour)

3 tablespoons of Monoi oil

(or virgin coconut oil)

1.

Mix the coconut flesh or flour with

the oil in a bowl. If you use coconut

flour, you will need more oil. Add your

flour to the bowl and gradually add

in the oil until the flour is completely

covered. Leave to rest for 15 minutes.

2.

Starting with your upper body,

massage the exfoliator into your skin

in circular motions. Gradually move

down your body to your lower half.

3.

Leave for a few minutes and then

step into a warm shower and gently

massage the scrub off your body.

Be careful not to let too much of the

mixture go down the drain; aim to

collect as much of the mixture and

place it in the bin.

BEAUTYForest frolics

The Redwood State Park in NorCal is

high on our bucket list. Who wouldn’t

want to literally drive through an

ancient tree? Giant sequoias and coastal

redwood trees have existed along the

northern California coast for about

20 million years. It’s also home to the

tallest tree in the world (which stands at

a towering, unfathomable 115.7 metres).

By way of comparison, that’s two times

the height of the Sydney Town Hall.

There’s something deeply poetic

and meditative about standing on a

spongey forest floor under a canopy of

trees while smelling the pungent scents

of damp moss, cedar, pine and amber.

Being surrounded by nature, with the

sounds of the air whooshing through

the branches and leaves, can be a

profoundly relaxing experience.

Create your own dose of forest therapy

with these earthy, enchanting scented

delights for your home. Close your eyes,

inhale the notes of sandalwood, teak,

you’re walking in the woods.

Peace OUT IN

Provence

Provence, one of the most beautiful

regions in France, is located at

the foothills of the Alps and offers

exceptional natural beauty (which

is probably why Rénoir, Van Gogh,

Cézanne, Picasso and other great

impressionist artists drew inspiration

from the area).

Whether you’re out in the

vineyards, hiking up the hills and

mountains beyond, or discovering

endless fields of lavender or

sunflowers, Provence is a stunning

variety of landscapes.

To evoke the Provence spirit in

your home, comfort is key. Create

a room where you can relax and

unwind. Textures and colour palette

are pivotal here – use warm pastel

colours, textiles of natural materials,

and aged furniture with scuffs, patina

and wood carvings. Complete your

LAVENDER MACARONS

WITH HONEY BUTTERCREAM

INGREDIENTS

Macarons:

1 cup confectioners sugar

1 tbsp dried lavender buds

Purple food colouring

3/4 cup almond meal

2 egg whites

3 tbsp sugar

Honey buttercream:

1/2 cup butter

1 cup confectioners sugar

2 tbsp honey

METHOD

Preheat oven to 150 degrees

Celsius. Line two sheets with

baking paper. Blend confectioners

sugar, lavender and almond meal

in a food processor until fine,

then whisk everything into a

large bowl.

In the bowl of a stand mixer with

the whisk attachment affixed, add

the egg whites and sugar. Turn

the mixer on to power level 4 and

whisk the mixture together for

3 minutes.

runnier than you’d think, closer to

pancake batter than cake batter.

Fill a pastry bag with batter. You

can use a pastry bag with just a

coupler, or with a tip. Pipe your

shells onto the parchment-paper

lined baking sheets, a little more

than 2cm in size, spacing them

about 2.5cm apart.

When you’re done piping, pick

up the pan and whack it down

hard against your counter. Do

this another time, rotate the pan

90 degrees and do the same

thing twice. You might see tiny air

bubbles appear on the top of the

rounds; a good sign because they

could be potentially damaging if

buried within the batter. Repeat

with the other pan.

Slide the pans into the oven and

bake for about 15 minutes, at

which point the shells should be

able to be cleanly picked off the

parchment paper.

Let the shells come to room

temperature.

Next, turn the power up to 7 and

whisk an additional 3 minutes.

Turn the power up to 8 and whisk

an additional minute or two.

There should be a stiff meringue

in the bowl. Feel free to mix in

food colouring at this point and

whisk at 8 speed for an additional

minute to incorporate the colour.

Knock the meringue that’s

trapped in the whisk back into

the bowl. Now, add the almond

meal mixture into the bowl all at

once – you don’t need to be too

gentle with the batter. By the time

it’s ready, its consistency will be

Honey buttercream:

In the bowl of a stand mixer,

beat the butter using the whisk

attachment for about 2 minutes.

Slowly add the confectioners

sugar, and whisk until everything

is incorporated. Do the same with

the honey. Beat another minute or

so to get everything incorporated.

Fill macarons with the honey

buttercream. Eat, and then eat

some more.

SKIN

Bakuchiol

the retinol alternative

for sensitive skin

38

BAKUCHIOL IS THE NEW WORD ON

EVERY BEAUTY INSIDER’S LIPS, DERIVING

RETINOL-LIKE RESULTS WITHOUT THE

IRRITATING SIDE EFFECTS.

Aside from sunscreen, Vitamin

A is arguably the single-most

important ingredient to help

prevent, restore, normalise and repair

damaged skin. We’re going to put it

out there: it’s the powerhouse of antiageing

skincare.

Retinol is a Vitamin A (retinoic

acid) derivative that is an effective

and widely used topical anti-ageing

solution. It has been shown to

reduce many visible signs of skin

ageing, especially fine lines and

wrinkles, encouraging better cell

turnover in the upper layers and

normalising skin turnover. It enables

surface hyperpigmented cells to

be sloughed off evenly, in addition

to reversing the damaging effects

of UV light on the skin cells,

which result in hyperpigmentation.

Retinoids are also responsible for

tyrosinase inhibition, reducing

clumping of melanin and reducing

melanosome size to further improve

pigmented spots.

While this is all good news, using

retinol can come with drawbacks

in the form of some less than ideal

side effects, such as redness, dryness,

irritation and flakiness. This is where

bakuchiol enters the equation and

is being hailed as a breakthrough

natural alternative to retinol –

without any side effects and safe

to use on even the most sensitive

skin and also during pregnancy and

breast feeding.

WHAT IS BAKUCHIOL?

Bakuchiol is a clinically proven

plant-based alternative to retinol

(derived from the seeds and leaves

of the Indian Babchi plant (Psoralea

Corylifolia)). While molecularly

it has no structural resemblance to

retinoids, a recent study by the British

Journal of Dermatology has found

that bakuchiol is able to regulate

similar genes to retinol. Comparable

in anti-ageing effects on the skin and

better tolerated than retinol, it is

the perfect alternative for those who

cannot use Vitamin A. It is able to

help prevent and restore premature

ageing, by helping to plump the

complexion. Bakuchiol’s ability to

minimise melanin results in a visibly

www.cosbeauty.com.au 39

BAKUCHIOL HAS BEEN

ON OUR RADAR FOR SOME

TIME NOW AS A FANTASTIC

RETINOL ALTERNATIVE.

SKIN

calmed and even skin tone.

Skincare stalwarts Medik8

have recently released Bakuchiol

Peptides to its impeccable product

range. Formulated with 1.25%

pure bakuchiol, Bakuchiol Peptides

is enhanced with brightening

peptides and calming cica extract.

With continued use, not only

can you expect to experience

retinol-like results in terms of

skin rejuvenation and a reduction in

fine lines, you’ll also see improved

skin tone and clarity.

‘Bakuchiol has been on our radar

for some time now as a fantastic

retinol alternative,’ explains Daniel

Isaacs, Director of Research at

Medik8. ‘We currently use it in our

Calmwise range, but we wanted to

create a dedicated bakuchiol product

for those who can’t use retinoids,

including pregnant and nursing

mothers*, or those with extremely

sensitive skin. Bakuchiol Peptides

gives these customers an alternative

to Vitamin A.’

‘Bakuchiol is proven to provide

similar results in collagen stimulation

and skin rejuvenation on the skin

to retinol, helping to reduce the

appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

and improve overall skin texture

and tone, but without retinol-like

side effects. Medik8’s Bakuchiol

Peptides is enhanced with centella

asiatica, and is therefore incredibly

soothing and calming on the

skin, helping to visibly reduce any

inflammation and redness. Visibly

plumped and supple, the skin is left

feeling soft and smooth.’

IS BAKUCHIOL

AS EFFECTIVE AS

RETINOL?

The British Journal of Dermatology

investigated the comparison between

retinol and bakuchiol – kicking

off the buzz around bakuchiol in

2019. ‘The study was conducted

over 12 weeks, and found that both

bakuchiol and retinol significantly

decreased wrinkle surface area and

hyperpigmentation, with no statistical

difference between them,’ explains

Isaacs. ‘Bakuchiol has been found to

be comparable to retinol in antiageing

effects, and is better tolerated

than retinol.’ CBM

*Of course, due to ethical considerations the

Bakuchiol Peptides formula has not been tested

on pregnant women, but there is nothing in the

formula which is known to be an issue (eg vitamin

A or high levels of exfoliating acids). If you are at

all concerned, always consult your doctor.

Medik8

Bakuchiol Peptides

KEY INGREDIENTS

‘The 1.25% pure bakuchiol

formula is enhanced with a

blend of brightening peptide

precursors and centella asiatica.

Centella asiatica is perfect for

visibly soothing and calming

inflamed, sensitive skin, whereas

inka omega oil is rich in omegas

3, 6 and 9, and is able to slip into

the gaps in the stratum corneum

to help restore the skin’s natural

barrier and block moisture loss,’

explains Isaacs.

Lipid-soluble brightening

peptide precursors penetrate the

skin with ease, helping prevent

production of pigment in the

skin, resulting in a visibly brighter,

more even complexion with less

hyperpigmentation.

While bakuchiol naturally has

short-term photostability, meaning

it can be used day and night, the

formula has also been optimised

for true long-term photostability –

contained in a UV-protected glass

bottle and infused with photostabiliser

krameria triandra root

extract within the formula.

1.25% PURE

BAKUCHIOL

A clinically proven alternative

to retinol, bakuchiol helps to

GLOWING SKIN

(YES, EVEN IN WINTER).

The ultimate goal of any skincare

regimen is to have your skin looking

and functioning at its peak, while also

targeting concerns such as ageing, pigmentation

and blemishes. Most skin experts are in

agreement that a skincare routine incorporating

cleansing, treating and moisturising is the best

starting point for healthy and radiant skin.

As you age and your skincare needs shift, the

products and ingredients you use may change,

but a step-by-step skin routine should remain.

Skincare is never as simple as using any one

ingredient. Instead, your daily routine should

contain a range of beneficial ingredients,

including antioxidants, skin-restoring

formulations and skin-signalling ingredients.

A serious skin routine incorporates a variety of

layering strategies and techniques to diminish

fine lines and wrinkles, fade pigmentation and

age spots, firm sagging skin, minimise uneven

skin tone, and improve breakouts.

steps to

better

skin

cleanse

1.

Cleansers are an essential part of a

basic skincare routine. They wash off

makeup, dirt and oil and leave the

skin feeling clean and smooth.

Your skin should be cleansed at

least twice a day – in the morning

and evening.

There are cleansers for every skin

type. If you’re prone to blocked

pores, use gel formulations. For

delicate skin, use milky products.

For dry skin, use cream products.

Try something with glycolic acid or

AHA for added skin-refining and

anti-ageing benefits.

Serums have become the new essential in any

serious skincare routine. The effectiveness

of serums has evolved significantly over the

past decade as scientists now have a greater

understanding of precisely how ingredients

interact with skin cells.

One of the benefits of serums is that

they are very specific in what they do. For

example, serums containing retinol (Vitamin

A), L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and collagenstimulating

peptides are great for anti-ageing

and help improve fine lines and lax skin, while

hyaluronic acid is heaven-sent for dehydrated

and dry skin. Likewise, lactic acid, salicylic

acid and niacinamide (Vitamin B) can work

wonders for congested skin, and Vitamins A,

B3 and C can help improve the appearance of

pigmented, sun-damaged skin.

Unlike moisturiser, which sits on the skin

and protects the skin, serums are much

more readily absorbed. Serums therefore

represent a method for concentrated delivery

of cosmeceutical ingredients to target

specific skin conditions such as lines and

wrinkles, dehydration, redness, pigmentation,

congestion and blemishes.

For deeper penetration, try applying your

serum with a jade or quartz roller or an

at-home skin needling roller.

moisturise

BEAUTY

You should always moisturise

morning and night, regardless

of whether your skin is on the

oilier side. This will help to retain

the skin’s natural moisture and

provide a physical barrier against

environmental pollutants. While you

can use one product, it is advisable

to use a richer moisturiser at night

as the skin absorbs products

more effectively while you sleep,

undisturbed by environmental

factors such as the sun and wind.

If your skin is dry, use products

containing humectants such as

amino or fatty acids or hyaluronic

acid, as well as ingredients such as

plumping lipids. For sensitive skin,

look for anti-inflammatories such

as green tea and Resveratrol. For

combination or oily skin, you also

want anti-inflammatories as well as

ingredients that prevent oil slicks

from breaking out such as HA and

niacinamide. Formulations vary from

emulsions (water-based, which are

better for oily skin) to dense creams

(oil-based, better for dry skin).

exfoliate

1.

2.

BEAUTY

When you exfoliate, you remove dead surface cells that

contribute to dryness and oil that can cause blocked

pores and problems like acne. Exfoliating also stimulates

circulation and speeds up your skin’s natural exfoliation

process to remove cell debris, encourage the growth of new

healthy cells and leave skin looking fresher and brighter.

You can choose to use a mechanical exfoliation method,

which is typically a granular scrub style, or chemical

exfoliation, such as an alphahydroxy acid (AHA) chemical

exfoliant or a fruit-based enzyme exfoliant.

Bear in mind that an exfoliant doesn’t have to be harsh

or very grainy to work. In fact, a product that is too harsh or

is used with too much enthusiasm can do more harm than

good and granular scrubs can exacerbate problems such as

redness and broken veins.

Regular peels can also keep skin looking refreshed.

Light peels work to exfoliate and renew skin by removing

dead cells and promoting new cell growth. Common types

contain lactic acid and glycolic acid found in plant extracts.

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that occurs naturally in

our bodies and helps stimulate the production of collagen

and elastin in the dermal layer. It is also a humectant, which

attracts water molecules in the skin to the surface, giving a

plumper appearance. Different strengths of lactic peel can

be applied as you acquire a tolerance to the acid, which

encourages your skin to slough dead cells for a brighter,

fresher appearance.

A glycolic peel contains a higher potency of alpha hydroxy

acid. It can cause some tingling and pinkness, especially in

first-time users, but skin therapists are adept at matching

ingredient strength to your skin type. As well as promoting

a brighter, fresher appearance it helps fade freckles and

sun spots.

Low-concentration lactic or glycolic peels are available as

at-home treatments. While light peels will help the skin look

refreshed and smoother, they can’t remove deeper lines and

sun damage. For this an in-clinic deeper peel is required.

Exfoliation can be integrated into your routine directly

after the cleansing step one to two times a week.

Depending on the strength of the active ingredients and

your skin’s tolerance, a peel can be used every one to

four weeks.

Using a facial mask can soothe and

nourish skin, oxygenate and improve

circulation, help clear up blemishes and

even reduce the appearance of fine

Tightening masks help firm and tone

sagging skin, and moisturising masks

add moisture to dehydrated skin. For

oily or acne-prone skin, a purifying

mask can deep-cleanse skin and absorb

excess oil.

The benefits of masks are often

SKINCARE

OUR SKINCARE HEROES INCLUDE VITAMIN A, VITAMIN B

AND VITAMIN C, PLUS SUNSCREEN. PROVEN BY SCIENCE,

THESE AGE-DEFYING MARVELS IMPROVE YOUR COMPLEXION

AND HELP MAKE SKIN LOOK YOUNGER AND FUNCTION

MORE OPTIMALLY.

VITAMIN A

Vitamin A is *the* anti-ageing

skincare staple. Retinoids (including

retinol) are the best-known

derivatives of Vitamin A. They act as

antioxidants and neutralise the free

radicals that result from exposure

to light.

Retinoids are scientifically

proven to increase the thickness

of the dermis (the deeper layer of

the skin where wrinkles form),

and help the skin to appear and

function younger and healthier.

Dramatic improvements have also

been observed in regards to skin

smoothness, evening of skin tone and

overall skin rejuvenation.

They are extremely effective and

widely used in topical anti-ageing

solutions. Retinol products work to

reduce many visible signs of skin

ageing, especially fine lines and

wrinkles. They also encourage better

cell turnover in the upper layers,

sloughing off surface skin cells and

reversing the damaging effects of UV

light resulting in hyperpigmentation.

It goes without saying that

stabilised high-concentration retinol

formulations will be more effective

than run-of-the-mill products, but

will also typically be more irritating

to the skin to begin with. Formulators

are now developing effective

alternatives to Vitamin A with no

irritation at all and the ability to

use on even the most sensitive skin.

Medik8 have recently launched their

plant-based clinically-proven retinol

alternative, Bakuchiol Peptides –

without the retinol-like side effects.

A recent study by the British Journal

of Dermatology has found that

bakuchiol, derived from the seeds and

leaves of the Indian Babchi plant,

is able to regulate similar genes to

retinol. The study found that both

bakuchiol and retinol significantly

decreased wrinkle surface area and

hyperpigmentation, with no statistical

difference between them.

VITAMIN B

Vitamin B is the ultimate skincare

multitasker: It helps to increase

hydration levels in the skin through

increasing ceramide production;

improves the strength of the skin by

increasing production of skin barrier

proteins including keratin; improves

skin firmness and helps reduce the

appearance of fine lines by increasing

collagen production; improves the

immune function of the skin; reduces

excess oil production; and reduces

uneven skin tone and pigmentation.

Not only does it perform so many

beneficial functions for the skin on

its own but it also complements other

skincare ingredients to boost their

anti-ageing power.

Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B3,

is absorbed into the deeper skin layers

and works to improve hydration levels

as well as to prevent the formation of

dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It’s

beneficial for everyone, but especially

for people with dry or sensitive skin,

and some studies support its benefits

for reducing rosacea.

Vitamin B3 assists in the reduction

of uneven pigmentation by slowing

down the transfer of melanin to

the skin’s epidermis. Including this

super-powered ingredient into any

hyperpigmentation treatment plan is

therefore essential.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is a skin-beautifying

workhorse and is a proven ingredient

for creating a brighter complexion

and evening out skin tone, while

diminishing the appearance of fine

lines and wrinkles.

When added to your daily routine,

Vitamin C provides a range of benefits

– from evening skin tone, shielding

skin from the visible impacts of

pollution, boosting hydration levels,

and keeping your skin looking younger

for longer.

Of the many beneficial forms of

Vitamin C, ascorbic acid is a star for

its proven antioxidant properties that

boost the texture and tone of the skin.

This unique ingredient is backed by

research for dramatically brightening

skin for a more youthful-looking

complexion.

No matter what your skin type

or concern, Vitamin C should have

a firm place in your skincare routine.

It’s an easy fix for combating lackluster

skin thanks to its ability to regenerate

and renew skin cells and to inhibit

the production of melanin (the

chemical that creates pigmentation).

It also plays an important role in

the anti-ageing process – fighting

free radicals, fading dark spots, and

promoting the production of collagen,

which helps scarred and damaged

skin to heal faster.

SUNSCREEN

Don’t forget the all-important SPF

all year round. An incredible 80

to 90 percent of what we perceive to

be the signs of ageing (wrinkles,

dryness) are actually caused by sun

exposure. Apply sunscreen as the last

step in your skincare routine each and

every day. CBM

SELFIE

COSMETIC

SURGERY

IN THE

INSTAGRAM

AGE

BODY IMAGE RESEARCHER

AND CLINICIAN ROBERTA

HONIGMAN DESCRIBES

THE NEW SELFIE-CENTRIC

MARKETPLACE, ITS

DISTORTION OF REALITY

AND ITS EFFECT ON

COSMETIC SURGERY.

Appearance, presentation and popularity

have been promoted as the core to

identity, self-esteem and self-worth. Glossy

fashion magazines filled with airbrushed unrealistic

representations of both women and men have

constantly bombarded us, changing the goal posts

on what is considered beauty and style.

In many instances, these magazines and the

advertising dollars behind them have been held

responsible for the increasing incidence of body

image concern, eating disorders and the growing

demand for cosmetic procedures, especially in

the young.

But over the past couple of years, we have

entered a new era where technological

advancement and the rise of social media

have been added to the mix. Social media, the

relatively new kid on the block, has amplified and

accelerated the trend of visual awareness and

has possibly given the world its newest social

disruptor – the selfie.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 59

INSTAGRAM

AESTHETIC ADVISOR

Yes, the simple photo you take of

yourself using the high resolution

camera on your smartphone has

created an accidental revolution to

such a degree that the term ‘selfie’

became the Oxford dictionary word

of the year in 2013. Let’s face it – it

seems harmless enough. You take a

picture with your phone and share

it with close friends, family and

sometimes unwittingly the rest of the

world on social networking sites such

as Instagram and Snapchat and then

eagerly sit back for 10 seconds and

wait for comments.

Selfie-taking and posting is now

one of the most popular activities,

especially for young females aged

between 16 and 25 years who

spend on average 48 minutes a day

(up to 5.5 hours a week) taking

and uploading selfies. It has been

estimated that at least 16 images are

taken before one photo is posted,

while some young women had an

average of 150 selfies stored on their

phones and laptops.

New technological options added

to phones have launched selfietaking

and posting into a different

stratosphere. Filters and photo

editing apps such as Facetune, Line

Camera and Photoshop enable users

to edit their own photos, actually

morphing and distorting their real

bodies to make themselves appear

better looking, and often managing

to achieve a level of physical

“perfection” previously seen only

in airbrushed photos in celebrity

or beauty magazines. Facetune can

smooth out skin colour, make teeth

look whiter and eyes and lips bigger,

make faces look thinner, more

symmetrical and blemish-free.

A

NORMAL

Not only are people comparing

themselves to perfected images of

models and celebrities and even

friends, but there is now a daily

comparison of the real self to

an intentional or unintentional

fake self posted on social media.

How can anyone win, especially

adolescents who may be grappling

with their identity and body

image issues?

We are fast approaching a new

normal, where there is a danger

of losing touch with our real

appearance and are surprised when

we look in the mirror. This constant

focus, forced attention to detail and

public scrutiny has the potential to

fuel excessive pre-occupation with

appearance, and it is no surprise

that users have become much more

analytical of their faces, finding

flaws they hadn’t previously seen,

and become highly anxious.

Doctors, surgeons and mental

health professionals are pointing to

the ‘selfie-led’ social media culture

as a driving force of aesthetic surgery

among young people while also

heavily influencing plastic surgery

trends and cosmetic treatments.

International media reports note

the rise in the number of cosmetic

procedures requested, especially

amongst those in the early 20s age

group, but also the kinds of facial

surgery being requested has also

changed. Nose jobs were the most

common request, but now, the

authors say, procedures that will

have effects similar to selfie filters,

such as facial symmetry and eyelid

surgical procedures are in favour.

Where in the past patients used

to bring in photos of actors and

celebrities, they now bring in selfies

with heavily filtered versions of

themselves in order to point out

what they don’t like about their

appearance. But what sort of image

are they actually capturing in

these photos?

By its very design, the fisheye

lens on a camera phone distorts

appearance as it is designed to get

a panoramic view, often of scenery,

for example, in travel photos or

of groups of people together. A

selfie taken with that particular

camera lens will distort appearance,

(exaggerating a chin if we’re looking

down or widening our nose if we’re

too close to the camera), creating an

illusion that wouldn’t necessarily be

noticed—or even exist—in real life.

The danger is that patients build

their beliefs in a need for cosmetic

change on these app-altered

appearances and are rarely

dissuaded from their goal even

if it is pointed out how the

fisheye lens on the camera phone

distorts appearance.

In the old, pre-smartphone days,

people with body image issues might

typically slip away from class or

work to check their appearance in

the bathroom mirror. Now a lot of

patients are replacing some of that

behaviour with repeatedly taking

selfies, sometimes for hours on end

throughout the day, to check their

appearance at different angles and

in different lighting. It’s starting to

shape their expectations of what

‘normal’ should now look like.

SNAPCHAT

DYSMORPHIA

The term ‘snapchat dysmorphia’ was

coined to describe people who bring

their own heavily doctored or filtered

selfies to surgeons, requesting to look

more like their photos. They have

been known to trawl through endless

selfies on their phones, trying to find

how they liked the way their lips or

cheeks looked on a particular day in

certain lighting.

The danger here is that these

behaviours are becoming more

integrated into the rituals of people

suffering Body Dysmorphic Disorder,

and the blurring of fantasy and reality

could trigger unrealistic requests

for cosmetic procedures. Selfie

dysmorphia is described as a category

of this condition but involves people

becoming obsessed with how they

look in selfies and wanting to look like

a filtered version of themselves.

BDD is a serious psychiatric

condition on the OCD spectrum,

defined as imagined ugliness where the

sufferer sees an imagined or very slight

defect in physical appearance which

causes them significant

distress. Sufferers believe they are

truly hideous while to others they

seem fine, even quite attractive, and

have no idea why the sufferer has

such an extreme reaction.

For people with BDD their concerns

are real, severe and very distressing

and it impacts on their ability to

function on a daily basis. They believe

that if they can see a defect, it must

be there. They can’t be convinced

otherwise or talked out of their beliefs

and continually seek reassurance

especially from family members,

creating stress and anxiety.

With the degree of self-reflection

and self-examination that comes with

selfies and social media, it is no longer

just the mirror we have to deal with.

There is a new, more pernicious twist

where the lines of fantasy and reality

are being blurred and the perception

of appearance altered to the degree

that there is potential to lose sight of

actual appearance, creating anxiety

about what is truly normal. CBM

The

CELEBRITY

EFFECT

In the new era of selfies, social

media and celebrity ubiquity, many

aesthetic practitioners are finding

themselves at the nexus of medicine

and consumerism. But who defines

the terms ‘too little’, ‘just enough’ and

‘too much’? Is there a new definition

of ‘normal’?

Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Malcolm

Linsell says, ‘The celebrity effect is

real. The question is: is it a source of

inspiration, or perspiration?’

It’s not necessarily a case of

patients coming to their plastic

surgeon and asking to look like J.Lo,

he says. Instead, the celebrity effect

is more an underlying pervasion,

through ubiquitous image editing

and curation on social media,

subconsciously influencing the

patient’s perception on what is

deemed beautiful and normal.

The celebrity effect isn’t necessarily

a bad thing. Kim Kardashian

West, for example, has brought a

new element of beauty into the

mainstream, one that is curvier with

a darker, Middle Eastern complexion

that resonates with more women

across the word than a blonde

catwalk model. The negative is a

preoccupation with self-examination

and a distorted reality of what is

‘normal’. It can also foster unrealistic

HAVE REALISTIC

EXPECTATIONS

ABOUT HOW WE CAN

expectations of what cosmetic

enhancement can achieve, as well as

triggering low-esteem and even BDD

in susceptible individuals.

In the American Academy of Facial

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

(AAFPRS) 2019 annual survey,

72 percent of AAFPRS members

reported that patients said looking

better in a selfie on social media

was their reason for getting plastic

surgery – up 15 percent from 2018.

In addition, 84 percent of members

said that celebrities influenced the

decision of patients to have cosmetic

surgery. This number is up six percent

from 2018, with a 21 percent increase

versus 2016. The most sought-after

celebrity looks for 2019 were Kylie

Jenner and Kim Kardashian West.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 65

AESTHETIC ADVISOR

A DISTORTED

REALITY?

Today’s celebrities can appear ageless – and

nobody emulates this more than Jennifer Lopez

aka J.Lo, the new ‘face’ and ‘body’ of a 50-yearold

with two children (and twins, no less). But

do highly edited images make them appear more

‘perfect’ than they really are?

‘Most people would know about the images

taken of J.Lo in the now-famous green Versace

dress at Milan Fashion Week last year, the same

dress she wore to the Grammy’s 20 years ago when

she was 30,’ says Dr Linsell. ‘She looks fantastic,

and arguably better at 50 years old than 30. But if

you look closely, the dress is similar but not exactly

the same. The dress she wore last year comes up

above her belly button. My suspicion is that the

dress is covering abdominoplasty scars.’

‘The media was abuzz with articles on how

inspiring JLo is to look as fantastic as she does at

50, however the perception is not reality. These

images aren’t real life and the pressure to look like

JLo is unrealistic. The norm is for women who

have had children to remain with a slight bulge

due to abdominal separation, some excess skin and

droopier breasts.’

The more open and honest celebrities are

about what it takes to look as good as they do, he

says, the more we can have realistic expectations

about how we can look – and the cosmetic surgery

it may require.

The celebrity effect – and constant

bombardment of highly edited photos – has

changed public perception of ‘ideal’ beauty

standards and ‘normalised’ a look that is

unachievable for many.

‘In general, I tell my patients not to trust any

photo or image they see in mainstream or social

media,’ says Dr Linsell. ‘Just because you see an

image, it doesn’t mean it’s real!’ CBM

LIPSTICK

The grande dame of modern lip products,

lipsticks are arguably the most enduring

cosmetic product. In fact, lipsticks in some

form or another span the entire modern

history of mankind, with origins dating back

some 5,000 years ago. Fast forward to 2020,

and a recent study out of Barcelona found

that lipstick is the most popular cosmetic

product among women in Europe.

Creamy, shiny, satin, glossy, shimmery

or matte – lipstick textures and finishes are

just about endless. They tend to be highly

pigmented and generally have more staying

power and coverage than most other lip

products. If you have dry lips, opt for a

moisturising formula and steer clear of a

matte finish.

LIP BALM

Lip balm is a handbag staple, especially

in the cooler months. It’s easy to apply

on the go and doesn’t require full-colour

commitment. These moisturising balms

are usually formulated to help soothe and

prevent dry, chapped lips, and often have a

host of beneficial lip-loving ingredients such

as SPF, shea butter and Vitamin E.

When you want a hint of colour with

your moisture, a tinted lip balm will kill two

birds with the one stone. Tinted balms offer

natural-looking colour with sheer to medium

coverage and a satin finish.

LIP GLOSS

Lip gloss is the quintessential makeup product, with

the ability to create a range of looks from the natural

to the high impact.

Lip gloss is more of a liquid tint as opposed to

being highly pigmented like lipstick – but it can be

just as dramatic with formulations offering anything

from ultra-high shine finish, glitter to a subtle

shimmering shine. It also has more staying power

than a balm and can give the illusion of plumper,

smoother lips.

It’s also a great texture to mask the appearance of a

dry, dehydrated pout.

If lip gloss had an older, more sophisticated sister,

it would be the lip lacquer. This makeup musthave

is much thicker and creamier than a gloss and

way more pigmented. As the name suggests, lip

lacquers deliver an ultra high shine ‘wet’ look for an

impeccable and dramatic finish.

LIP STAIN

If you want all-day colour with no touch-ups,

consider a lip stain. More heavily pigmented

than a lip tint, this finish has made a huge

resurgence the past few years. Lip stains are

a great option for imbuing colour to your lips

while keeping the finish au natural. The stains

are meant to enhance natural tones, so they’re

found most often in red, pink and peach hues.

Most lip stains come in a marker-like form

or can be ‘painted’ on, which allows you to

control the intensity of colour. Dab on a few

layers for a more pigmented finish. Once dry,

lip stains can last the whole day!

Lip tints, as opposed to stains, are more

muted and lend themselves to a fresh-faced and

natural look. The Korean ‘it’ girls’ fave, lip tints

are super easy to apply and dry matte, literally

staining your lips for long-lasting coverage.

Lip tints can be used all over your lips,

but we’re on board with the latest trend: the

gradient lip. Simply dab the product only on

the inner, centre part of the lips to create a

gradation effect; deep red in the middle and a

lighter pink on the outline.

LIP TALK

• Like fingerprints, your lip impressions

are unique.

• A passionate kiss can burn up to 50kJ of

energy in a few minutes, working as many

as 30 muscles.

• The average woman consumes nearly 3kg of

lipstick in her lifetime.

• The average human has about 10,000 taste

buds – however, they’re not all on the tongue.

Some can even be found on the lips – these

are especially sensitive to salt.

• It is said that Leonardo DaVinci spent 12 years

painting the Mona Lisa’s lips.

• Lay off the alcohol – it dehydrates your lips!

LIP OIL

A lip oil is somewhere between a

nourishing lip balm and a luxurious

lip gloss, usually made with a high

concentration of hydrating essential

oils such as jojoba and rosehip. Lip

oils can treat, soothe and nourish

your lips, all while helping them to

look plumper and juicier.

They typically deliver a lightweight

finish that is glossy and not sticky.

OUR

THE SHEET MASK

HAS EMERGED

AS ONE OF

THIS DECADE’S

BIGGEST BEAUTY

TRENDS.

Sheet masks, virtually unheard of

outside of South Korea until a few

years ago, are now big business

and changing the beauty industry.

There’s even a Mask Bar in NYC

specialising in Korean sheet masks.

According to Allied Market

Research, the sheet face mask global

market was valued at US$206 million

in 2018 and is anticipated to reach

$392.1 million by 2026.

A rising interest in Korean beauty

products alongside the surge of

celebrities sharing their face maskwearing

selfies on Instagram have

added to the fascination. In fact, the

sheet mask selfie, as flaunted by Lady

Gaga and Bella Hadid, became the

hottest look on Instagram in 2018.

Sheet masks are more than just

hype – the serum-soaked sheets are

loaded with beneficial ingredients such

as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants

and hyaluronic acid. The face-shaped

masks are applied directly onto your

skin for deep conditioning and typically

come in a single-use pouch, delivering

hydration, exfoliation or detoxification,

skin tightening or whitening,

depending on your

skin needs.

Sheet face masks are the ultimate

self-care beauty tool; the perfect facial

at home. Simply pop on a soothing

mask, leave on for the desired amount

of time and relax while the ingredients

work their magic to revive and

rejuvenate your skin. Sheet masks are

also surprisingly convenient, with no

preparation, peeling or rinsing off.

Simply rub in the excess serum into

your skin after you’ve removed the

mask and gently wipe off any excess.

Consider your skincare-and-selfie game

SELF-TANNERS

We know it’s cold outside, but there’s

nothing like a glowing tan to help show

winter who’s boss. A faux tan (of course) can

make us look healthy and radiant (even if

colder weather has other ideas). Self-tanner

can also make skin looker smoother, more

even in tone and even give the illusion of a

slimmer physique.

In the past few years, fake tans have come

a long way so there’s less chance of turning

out the colour of a carrot or smelling a little

funky. The first rule of a flawless fake tan is

exfoliation. The night before your tan, use a

body scrub or exfoliating lather to remove

any dry, flaky skin. This will help ensure your

tan results in a consistent, natural-looking

colour without any patchiness.

Before applying fake tan, slip on a tanning

mitt; orange palms are an obvious fake-tan

giveaway and tanning mitts help distribute

the product easily. Most tans take between

two to eight hours to develop, so try to

stay dry – don’t shower, swim or work out –

before then.

Keep skin hydrated with a quality

moisturiser everyday to prolong your faux

glow for as long as possible.

Bronzers are like sunshine in a powder. A subtle

golden glow in the cooler months can add a

touch of radiance and highlight your features.

Accentuate your cheekbones and create a

more sculpted look by applying a bronzer just

under the line of your cheekbone. Bronze all

over in spots the sun would touch (if we’d let

it!). Do it in a number 33 pattern – forehead

then under cheekbones then down to the jaw

line and finally under the chin for sculpting.

Try using a metallic bronze as a soft liner

under your lower lash line, or lightly sweep a

dusting of shimmery shadow on upper lids –

but try not to go above the crease line with

highly metallic shades. Be sure to choose just

one feature to accentuate so your shimmer

stays subtle and undetected. It’s all about

slowly building layers of colour, so avoid heavy

application at all costs.

Let there be light

BEAUTY

A hardworking highlighter or

illuminator is perfect to mask the

look of dull or dehydrated skin.

Dab small amounts on top of

your cheekbone – from the apple

of the cheek and up through to

the hairline. This makes skin look

hydrated while the diffused light

decreases the look of fine lines.

Also use small amounts on the inner

corner of the eye to add freshness,

as well as under the brow bone to

help ‘lift’ the eye.

Skin illuminators are a huge

breakthrough in makeup

technology; by reflecting light

and lightening the skin with an

iridescent glow, they make skin look

smoother and younger and hide

skin imperfections. And, of course,

they’re all-important when it comes

to contouring.

Contouring gives the illusion

of more defined contours, a

smaller nose and chin, and higher

cheekbones. We’ve all seen the

“in between” makeup shots of Kim

Kardashian West with light and

dark stripes strategically placed all

over her face and neck. This clever

makeup trick works wonders to

create a more chiseled, defined face

that reflects light beautifully and

gives an air-brushed effect.

It’s all about creating optical

illusions so that it looks like you are

constantly under the best lighting

ever – and, to do this, light and

shade, ie highlighters and bronzers,

will be your BFFs to create a

serums

Step 3:

Next up, add a conditioning and hydrating body

serum (cream or oil-based) before applying a body

moisturiser.

By layering these two products, you pair

humectant and occlusive ingredients to really

hydrate and help to lock in moisture.

Body serums are made of ingredients that have

high penetration and can target stubborn skin

problems such as dryness sensitivity and the

crepey look of ageing skin. A good-quality serum

will be loaded with active ingredients to replenish

skin lipids, which form around skin cells and help

strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and aid

the natural repair process.

Body serums are all about nourishing, repairing

Step 5:

If you’re one of the lucky ones not to sport

cellulite, you can skip this step. But for nine out

of 10 women, today’s specialised skin tightening

and smoothing products can improve the look of

cellulite and sagging skin.

Cellulite is actually a collection of fat that

pushes against the connective tissue underneath

the skin. Our thinner skin and weaker connective

tissue are the reasons women develop cellulite and

men typically don’t.

Topical cellulite products have had a bad

wrap in the past, but there now exists a range of

innovative formulations and products designed

to smoothen and tighten the skin across all areas

of the body. From cellulite to stretch marks, these

skin saviours will have you striding confidently

towards the warmer months.

Products that work on strengthening skin

structure and boosting collagen production are

where it’s at in the fight against cellulite. A

number of studies demonstrate the effectiveness

of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and retinol (a

Vitamin A derivative) in stimulating collagen

synthesis and improving the structure of the

Breast

Cancer

Awareness

BREAST CANCER IS THE #1 CANCER FOR

AUSTRALIAN WOMEN, HOWEVER THE 10-YEAR

SURVIVAL RATE IS INCREASING THANKS TO

SELF-AWARENESS, EARLY SCREENING AND

IMPROVED TREATMENTS.

Breast cancer is the most

common cancer affecting

Australian women. In a 2019

report, the Australian Institute of

Health and Welfare estimated that

19,998 women and 170 men will be

diagnosed with breast cancer

in 2020, an average of 55 people

per day.

The number of women and men

being diagnosed with breast cancer

in Australia is increasing, but

thankfully the number of deaths

from breast cancer is decreasing.

Australia has one of the best breast

cancer survival rates in the world.

The chance of surviving at least 10

years after treatment is 85 percent.

Increasing survival is due to earlier

diagnosis through screening and

improved treatments.

Early diagnosis and improved

survival rates can also be attributed

to ongoing support for breast

cancer awareness. The colour pink

reducing

your

risk

While there is no known way of preventing breast cancer,

making lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking,

reducing alcohol intake, reducing fat mass and increasing

exercise can all help to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

You may also wish to consider getting tested to find

out if you are susceptible to breast cancer, especially if

there is a family history of the disease. Having a firstdegree

relative, such as your mother or sister, with breast

cancer puts you at higher risk for the disease. The risk

is even greater if they developed breast cancer before

menopause, and in both breasts.

support, with everything from

supermarket products to iconic

Australian landmarks taking on a

pink guise in support of breast

cancer research.

Celebrities such as Kylie Minogue,

Christina Applegate, Cynthia

Nixon, Olivia Newton-John and

Sheryl Crow who have suffered

publicly from breast cancer use

their fame to become ambassadors

for the cause, putting their name to

government initiatives and helping

raise fundraising efforts even further.

WHAT IS BREAST

CANCER?

‘Breast cancer, like other cancers,

occurs because of an interaction

between the environment and a

defective gene,’ explains German

anti-ageing specialist Dr Michael

Klentze. ‘Specifically, breast cancer

occurs when a build up of genetic

mutations in critical genes – those

that control cell growth and division,

or the repair of damaged DNA

– allow cells to grow and divide

uncontrollably to form a tumour.’

‘Breast cancer, like prostate cancer,

is a hormone-dependent cancer,

which can develop under oestrogen

influence,’ he explains.

Although it is much more common

in women, men can also develop

breast cancer.

There is a medical distinction

made between early breast cancer

and secondary breast cancer. Early

breast cancer is cancer that is

contained within the breast and may

or may not have spread to the lymph

nodes (located under the armpit).

Secondary breast cancer is cancer

that has spread outside the breast

area. This distinction helps dictate

the best treatment option.

TREATMENT

‘Breast cancer is commonly treated

by various combinations of surgery,

radiation therapy, chemotherapy and

hormone therapy,’ says Dr Klentze.

There are a number of factors that

AUSTRALIA HAS ONE OF THE

BEST BREAST CANCER SURVIVAL

RATES IN THE WORLD.

Thousands at risk

of undiagnosed cancer

during COVID-19

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic,

there has been a 30 percent fall in referrals

to cancer specialists, according to media

reports. That’s because fewer people are

seeing their GPs and avoiding routine

pathology tests.

Pink Hope CEO and Founder Krystal

Barter said delayed diagnoses and

treatment could be devastating for women

at high-risk for, or in the early stages of,

breast and ovarian cancer. ‘If you are in

a high-risk group, then it’s absolutely

critical you seek information and support

for options available to you during the

coronavirus pandemic,’ she said.

Specialist Oncoplastic Breast Cancer

Surgeon Dr Jane O’Brien said there has

been roughly a 40 percent decline in

breast cancer diagnoses over the last few

months. ‘It is important for people to keep

up with their cancer screening, especially

for those at high risk, even if face-to-face

clinical consultations with their specialists

may have been suspended during the

pandemic,’ she said.

‘Approximately 60 percent of breast

cancers occur in the screening age of 50

to 74 years, and this typically accounts

for almost half of all breast cancer

diagnoses. However, since COVID-19

there will have been 30 percent fewer

cancers diagnosed in that age group

due to suspended screening.’

www.cosbeauty.com.au 113

FEATURE

influence the selection of breast

cancer treatment. According to Dr

Klentze, these include the age and

menopausal status of the patient,

the stage of the disease and whether

the tumour is aggressive or likely to

spread.

Another influential factor is

whether the tumour contains

oestrogen receptors (ER+) or

progesterone receptors (PR+). These

receptors indicate if hormones are

causing the cancer to grow bigger;

there are specific hormone-blocking

medications for each that can be used

during treatment.

WOMEN, AND ALSO

MEN, WHO HAVE

INHERITED CERTAIN

MUTATIONS IN GENES

HAVE A HIGHER RISK

OF DEVELOPING

BREAST CANCER.

Women with breast cancer usually

undergo a lumpectomy (the surgical

removal of a cancerous nodule)

or a mastectomy (removal of the

entire breast/s) to excise the cancer

from the breast, which can be

followed by radiation therapy and/or

chemotherapy to kill any remaining

cancer cells.

THE ANGELINA

JOLIE EFFECT

Discoveries in genetic research

has provided some valuable

information that can help identify

whether a person is more susceptible

to breast cancer in the first place,

therefore increasing the chance of

early detection.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are major

genes related to hereditary breast

cancer. Women, and also men, who

have inherited certain mutations

in these genes have a higher risk of

developing breast cancer, ovarian

cancer and several other types of

cancer during their lifetimes.

This breakthrough means that

people can now be tested for

these particular genes – and those

who carry them can be aware of

their susceptibility and closely

monitor their breasts for any

suspicious changes.

Perhaps the most famous carrier

of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene

mutation is actress Angelina Jolie.

The news that Jolie – one of the

world’s most glamorous women –

had undergone a double mastectomy

at the age of 37 stunned the world

in 2013 and brought this very

relevant public health issue to the

forefront of international media.

Faced with an 87 percent chance

of developing breast cancer in the

future, Jolie underwent her procedure

as a preventative measure – one that

brought her risk of developing the

disease down to just five percent.

It’s thought around five percent

of Australians – both men and

women – carry the BRCA1 and

BRCA2 gene. The availability

of genetic testing varies across the

country. Contact the Cancer

Council Australia for more

information. CBM

114

check yourself

To ensure the best possible outcome, early detection

is all-important. As with all types of cancer, the risk

of breast cancer spreading from the breasts to other

parts of the body increases dramatically if it is not

detected early. The good news is that the knowledge,

technology and medical expertise is all readily

available here in Australia to help women take charge

of their breast health.

It is critical every woman knows how to do breast

self-examination. As of age 20, self-checking using the

points below should be a monthly routine:

• Most doctors recommend lying down with one

arm behind your head. With the other hand, feel

each breast with your middle three fingers for any

irregular lumps, cyst-like formations, thickening or

unusual dimpling. Be sure to feel the entire breast

area – from the top of the chest, under each arm,

around the breast mound and down towards the

rib cage.

• You can also look at your breasts in the mirror,

both with your hands on your hips and in the air.

Check for changes in colour, shape, nipple location,

dimpling or anything that is irregular.

• Use your thumb and forefinger to gently press the

nipple and check for any irregular discharge.

• It is not a cause for panic if you do come across

an anomaly – 80 percent of lumps turn out to be

benign – but you should consult with your doctor as

soon as possible to be sure.

• For pre-menopausal women especially, aim to

perform the self-exam at the same time each

month, ideally after your period. As your breasts

change as you go through your menstrual cycle, by

examining them at the same point in your cycle, you

can make a more accurate comparison.

IT’S PREDICTED

AROUND FIVE

PERCENT OF

AUSTRALIANS CARRY

THE BRCA1 AND

BRCA2 GENE.

Some changes to look for:

• A new lump, or lumpiness, especially if it is in

one breast.

• Nipple discharge.

• Change in the size or shape of the breast or nipple.

• Change in the skin over the breast, such as redness

or dimpling.

• Unusual persistent pain, especially if it is one breast.

• If you’re concerned by a family history of breast

cancer, or by any changes to your breasts, speak to

The nose is the central feature of your

face and plays a key role in facial

symmetry. Any abnormalities will

affect the overall aesthetics of the face,

and changing the size or shape of the nose

to bring it into harmony and balance

with the rest of the face can be a lifealtering

event – both physically and

psychologically.

According to the most recent

International Society for Aesthetic

Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) statistics,

rhinoplasty is the second most

performed facial cosmetic surgery in

Australia (eyelid surgery takes the

top spot).

Rhinoplasty’s enduring

popularity is world-wide. A June

2020 report by money.co.uk

revealed queries relating to

“rhinoplasty” were the

most popular cosmetic search

item in Europe in

the past 12 months.

WHAT CAN

RHINOPLASTY DO?

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, improves the appearance and proportion of the nose,

enhancing overall facial aesthetics and harmony. Surgery of the nose may also

be performed to remove deviations caused by a birth defect or injury, or correct

impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose.

Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the

tip or bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils or change the angle between the nose

and upper lip.

Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to balance it with other facial features. There are

two main techniques – open (incision made at the base of the nose) and closed

(incisions inside nose) – that can change the size of the nose, remove a hump,

narrow the nostrils, change the angle and/or refine the tip.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING

NOSE SURGERY?

Generally, after anaesthesia is administered, incisions are made inside the nasal

cavity and often at the base of the nose. The skin of the nose is then separated

from its framework of cartilage and bone.

To reduce nose size, some cartilage in the middle of the nose (septum) is removed

until the desired size is achieved. To build up the nose, cartilage and bone may be

added to increase its size. Changing the tip or bridge and the nose angle is achieved

by reshaping the cartilage and soft tissue. Nostril span is narrowed via small

incisions at the base of each nostril.

The incisions are sutured closed and a splint or cast is applied to help the nose

maintain its shape and expedite healing. The procedure normally takes around

two hours.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia. However, depending

on the preference of the surgeon and/or the patient, it can also be performed under

local anaesthesia.

Nasal packing, in which gauze or cotton packs are applied to the nasal chambers,

is used to support the new structure and prevent bleeding. The packing is typically

removed within 24-48 hours after surgery.

Most patients experience some mild to moderate discomfort after rhinoplasty for

a few days. Any pain can generally be controlled through medication prescribed

by the surgeon. About 80 percent of the swelling is usually gone within a week

or two. Swelling starts to resolve more slowly after that. The majority of swelling

disappears after around two months and the rest slowly disappears over the next

year, when final results become apparent.

DIFFERENT TYPES

OF RHINOPLASTY

PROCEDURES

Open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty are generally the two

types of rhinoplasty procedures available.

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions on the inside of

the nose. Although this results in no visible scarring, the

procedure offers less visibility of the inside of the nose and is

typically not possible for more complex cases.

During open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the

columella (the strip between the nostrils). This results in

a fine, well-concealed scar that shoud fade over time. The

surgeon will help the patient decide which is most suitable.

Non-surgical

options

Non-surgical rhinoplasty uses fillers to correct

minor external nasal deformities, depressions,

asymmetries, collapsed nasal bridges and saddle

noses. It can also be an effective technique

for making corrections post-surgery where

the results of earlier rhinoplasty have been

unsatisfactory or need a slight tweak.

A relatively quick procedure, non-surgical

rhinoplasty requires no anaesthesia and involves

no downtime. Most fillers will leave a residual

redness and slight tenderness for up to a few

days and patients can expect slight swelling and

bruising. The results are immediately evident

and can last up to a year.

RHINOPLASTY

RESULTS

Results of rhinoplasty are not immediate.

The nose becomes more refined with better

definition over time, and may take up to a year

for final results. Most patients can expect to

return to work within a week or two and to

more strenuous activity after a few weeks.

Benefits of this procedure can range from

improved breathing to enhanced appearance

and self-confidence. Rhinoplasty can offer subtle

or dramatic changes to a person’s appearance.

Often even a small change in the shape and

position of the nose can create a significant

difference to overall facial aesthetics.

Revision rhinoplasty is necessary in five to 12

percent of rhinoplasty cases. While some may

require only minor adjustments, others may

need major modification, and may be a result of

too much or too little bone, cartilage or tissue

having been removed, resulting in a nose that is

too large or too small for the face.

Although techniques for any rhinoplasty

surgery may differ, as well as the patient’s desired

results and the surgeon’s personal preference,

there is no doubt that a well-performed

rhinoplasty has the potential to dramatically

improve the appearance of both the nose and

the entire face. CSBM
